White Light/White Heat" [cat#: LP 5413, B0016246-01 LP02], mono. Originally issued as Verve Records V-5046, January 30, 1968. Matrix / Runout (Runout Side B, etched): 16246LP1 - B S-83130 [The zero was corrected in one] S 83131 You dont really buy these VU Originals to listen to, but to have it. I think this is the best 1st pressing out of their 4 studio albums. Of course Lou’s Closet Mix pushes the brightness to highlight the vocals and the clarity of the drums. However, this US pressing is not the one to go to. It sounds good, but it still has some muffling going on with Moe’s drums. Doug’s organ and bass benefit greatly though. For the cost that this box set is going for currently I have to say it's not totally worth getting unless you're one who HAS to have it regardless. It is a great collector's item, I will give it that, and when I first learned of its release I didn't hesitate to buy it, though I feel it may've been a bit of a waste, considering I have essentially all of the material already, but the extra 'radio spot's record is a great bonus, and the mono mixes, which I don't have on CD, are exciting, getting to hear some of my all-time favorites in a new light. And let's face it, vinyl records are SOOO much cooler to have than CD's, there's just something about the appeal of a record that CD's will never have, and don't get me started on people who buy only mp3's... The Velvet Underground" [cat#: LP 5414, B0016246-01 LP03], mono. Originally issued as MGM Records SE-4617. April 1969.

I’d say the closet mix is better for side 1, and the Valentin mix is better for side 2. So, if you have this and the 1985 US pressing, you’re completely set. Sunday Morning" and "Here She Comes Now" published by Oakfield Avenue Music Ltd./Garnant Music (BMI)Underwhelming. Looks pretty good and the single versions are what they are but I have had two boxes and both are as warped as they could be and still be playable. And the corresponding records in each box were warped in the exact same way suggesting it's a pressing issue. You guys do realize that only the first lp is true mono. The second lp is half fold down stereo and the others are stereo fold downs through the entire albums. The Velvet Underground & Nico" [cat#: LP 5412, B0016246-01 LP01], mono, gatefold cover. Originally issued as Verve Records V-5008, March 12, 1967.

Anyway, what is here, as is clear in the thorough description, are 7"records, though unfortunately only two of them have colored sleeves (the rest have plain brown paper sleeves); although All Tomorrow's Parties is pretty much the only one that originally did come with a colored sleeve (and in this collection the Radio Spot sleeve gets its own, made from their third album cover photo) I still think they could've done some photoshopping of old band photos (like all the booleggers do) for those extra 5 records to give the set a more visual appeal. That is essentially my biggest dissappointment. Recorded at Record Plant Studios, NYC. Mixed by Michael Barbiero at Mediasound, NYC and J.C. Convertino at Sigma Sound Studios, NYC.Includes the rare mono versions of the VU’s first three albums, the superior mono version of Nico’s Chelsea Girl (featuring Reed, Cale & Morrison) and a definitive edition of the band’s unfinished fourth album! Another thing to consider is, according to some posters on the Steve Hoffman forums, this release wasn't even supposed to exist as a stand alone release, rather, as part of a 50th anniversary box set coming out in a month or so, but apparently was released by accident, or was possibly supposed to come out as a stand alone release at a later date, but someone messed up and released it early. This may have even been recalled already. So for those who didn't jump on this, you'll have to re-buy all the albums again to get this set if it isn't eventually released on its' own. Which, as I stated previously, most fans probably won't want to do just to get the extra material, as they may already have better versions of the original albums.

You can feel Lou’s presence and is most prominent on Candy Says and Jesus. This is also the only VU album in which the drums actually sound like drums and not tea bags…
