About this deal

Pierre's carefully balanced satirical tone teases the reader through the novel's seeming implausibility. Some of the characters are riotously funny. (...) Like many first-person narratives, Vernon God Little occasionally jars. There is a little too much repetition of the restrictive vocabulary of a cursing Texan teenager, while at other times the voice seems overly poetic. This aside, Vernon is a marvellous creation. His vibrant commentary on his family and, more widely, America is often ill-informed but always amusingly thought-provoking." - Andrew Laing, Sydney Morning Herald Pierre goes a long way in undermining it at the very outset, in the first paragraph, as he describes Mrs Lechuga:

In the end I was compelled to write," he said. "It was either that or take a length of rope and hang myself in the forest." Judge Judy. The fast turnover of guests makes the show a buffet of syntax and mannerisms. You can spot changes entering the language as guests from different regions repeat forms. (Currently: “I had went”, “They had tooken”, which is climbing through the American middle class and headed over here.)When it first appeared in 2007 Tanya Ronder's adaptation of DBC Pierre's prize-winning novel was somewhat overshadowed by a shooting on a Virginia campus which eerily echoed the book's high-school massacre. But, freed from that fortuitous topicality, it is now possible to see the play as a bracing satire which blends the youthful isolation of JD Salinger's The Catcher In The Rye with the comic grotesquerie of Terry Southern's The Magic Christian. My family planted the idea that I could do anything, and I want to apologise for taking them so literally"

Observer review: Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre | Fiction

In 2005, Variety reported that Pawel Pawlikowski was working on producing a film adaptation of the book, with FilmFour Productions. See Dawtrey, Adam (18 January 2005). "Pawel Pawlikowski". Variety. Reed Business Information.Well written and darkly funny with a lot of good satire about small-town Americans and the media, I didn’t enjoy this book much. It wasn’t because of the dark subject matter, it was just because everyone in it is just so goddamn mind-numbingly stupid that it was hard for me to take. And not just stupid, there’s a casual level of indifference and cruelty here that’s also tough to stomach. At times, I found it hard to root for Vernon just because he’s so damn dumb. Well I learned you don't need to spell correctly to win the Man Booker Prize, as long as the misspelling is funnier and more poignant than the original word. A no-brand smile grows under the sheriff's moustache. 'Regular boy then, are you, son? You like your cars, and your guns? And your - girls?'

Also there was a media channel that proposes in the later half of the book:the reality show based on convicts and gain of votes on sympathy. All right, Eileena.' Gurie shoots me a stare that says 'Don't relax' and points her bone at the door. I follow the wooden lady to reception. How does Vernon change and mature over the course of the novel? How does your attitude toward him change? Did you ever think that he had been part of the shooting? The prestigious award is for the best novel of the last 12 months by an author from a Commonwealth country or the Republic of Ireland. I will attempt to make this review quite long, so that you will read a realistic account of the quality of this book before you read the boorish and thoughtless dismissals that abound below.

The officer shows me into a room with a table and two chairs. No window, just a picture of my friend Jesus taped to the inside of the door. I get the stained chair. Pulling on my clothes, I try to imagine it's last weekend; just regular, rusty moments dripping into town via air-conditioners with missing dials; spaniels trying to drink from sprinklers but getting hit in the nose instead. Out for revenge are the townspeople, the cable news networks, and Deputy Vaine Curie, a woman whose zeal for the Pritikin die is eclipsed only by her appetite for barbecued ribs from the Bar-B-Chew Barn. So Vernon does what any red-blooded American teenager would do; he takes off for Mexico. Her eyes widen for a moment. Then narrow to a squint. 'Vernon - we're talking accessory to murder here. It'll take as long as it takes.' Pierre gets a few things down right: the kids' relationships, for one, and especially the teenage relationships with some of the marginal adults are well handled (and go a long way to explain how this whole mess could happen). The United Kingdom's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. The massacre is just another thing to deal with, and the everyday routines aren't really upset by it.
