Vivo has had a great few years with its flagship X range, and that trend is set to continue with the impressively capable Vivo X90 Pro. It's the usual 1 + 3 + 4 configuration that MediaTek has used for some time now, but with Qualcomm switching things up with its 1 + 2 + 2 + 3 model on the 8 Gen 2, I was intrigued to see how the Dimensity 9200 would hold up over extended use. The good news is that the platform is just as powerful in daily use as Qualcomm's silicon, and Arm's Immortalis-G715 is closer to the Adreno 740 than I imagined.

Vivo X90 Pro review: Good phone, incredible camera Vivo X90 Pro review: Good phone, incredible camera

Weird name aside, FunTouch OS has a bit of a bad reputation for being one of the worst skins available for Android smartphones – though I must say that the company has come a long way with the software in the past few years. We test every mobile phone we review thoroughly. We use industry-standard tests to compare features properly and we use the phone as our main device over the review period. We’ll always tell you what we find and we never, ever, accept money to review a product. You might be daunted at the idea of a MediaTek chipset if you’ve used budget or low-end mid-range phones in the past, but I’m here to dispel those worries. The chipset, combined with the 12GB of RAM on offer from the X90 Pro, delivers flagship-level performance both in terms of benchmarks and real-world use. Naturally there’s 5G support, along with the latest Bluetooth 5.3 standard and the not-quite-latest Wi-Fi 6 – for some reason it doesn’t support the more recent Wi-Fi 6E, though it’s unlikely your router does either. X90 Pro is equipped with vivo standard charger, and supports up to 120W FlashCharge. The actual charging power is dynamically adjusted as the scene changes, and subject to actual use. When it comes to charging, the 120W charger included with the phone is about as fast as they come. With the phone’s optional ‘Fast charging’ setting enabled, it restored an impressive 70% of the phone’s battery – so basically a day’s worth – in just 15 minutes of charging, one of the fastest scores we’ve ever recorded. The camera interface is similar to what you'll find on most phones these days, and you get the usual slate of toggles for switching between the various lenses, HDR, AI-assisted scene detection, and so on. The Pro mode is quite useful if you want to shoot in RAW, and there are a decent number of shooting modes, including Portrait, Panorama, Moon, Slo-mo, Food, Dual View, Astro, and more. Finally we get to arguably Vivo’s key weak point in its ongoing attempts to break into Western markets: software. The 50MP main camera is joined by a 50MP telephoto with OIS and 2x optical zoom, and a 12MP wide-angle lens with a 108-degree field of view. Up front, you get a 32MP camera with a fixed focus that can shoot 1080p videos. The data shown is from results of laboratory tests. Actual game load time may vary depending on specific conditions. While the phone misses out on gimbal stabilization this time, you get excellent stabilization while shooting handheld, and I didn't run into any issues whatsoever in this area. The best part is that Night mode works with video (at 4K30), and it delivers some of the best video footage you'll see out of any device in this category. The price puts it pretty directly against competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max, but that’s a big ask for a phone with less brand recognition, fewer repair and warranty options, and a less polished software experience.
