Clarke’s budget pump went head to head with the Halfords Essential on price. It costs just 40p more, and its foot plate is exactly the same size, although it’s covered in rubber for extra grip, which was handy in wet conditions.

Water System Guide for DIY Camper Van Conversion - FarOutRide Water System Guide for DIY Camper Van Conversion - FarOutRide

Even the largest portable showers hold a maximum of five gallons of water. For amateur campers, this is typically enough for one person to take a relatively decent shower with enough time to soap up and rinse off. More experienced campers might be able to stretch those same five gallons to two or even three showers. The key is to be ruthless about turning the showerhead on and off (i.e., the ultra-efficient "Navy shower"). The key is to never let it freeflow. By using the navy shower method, you can cut your water consumption — both in the wild and at home — by up to 95%. If installing a diaphragm pump (like the Shurflo we recommend), you might consider adding an accumulator. The accumulator contributes to longer pump life, less noise, less amperage draw, and reduced water pulsation. It also reduces cycling (the pump starts less often), nice. From the underside of the Basin Side Wall, make sure the Upstanding Rib Wall on the Trimmed Lid is flush with the bottom of the Basin Side Wall. (photo 2) Use Aluminum pop-rivets (with washer) to secure these two components through the four drilled holes. This is the method we recommend for permanent, leak-free connections. It’s easy, fast, fun (yep!) and there is very little chance for error. It’s also good to know that a clamp tool can clamp any ring size (as opposed to crimp). Here is how it goes: A diaphragm pump keeps the water system pressurized at all times. It means having running water just like at home in a house. Because it requires such a secure mount, a giant propane tank, and a constant supply of fresh water via the hose, this isn't an off-grid camping shower. It's better suited to permanent or semi-permanent mounting outside by your pool or perhaps rigged up next to your RV in a campground with hookups. Some of its attachments aren't the most leakproof, and it's best used with certain extras that don't come standard — like on/off valves for the cold water input and hot water output lines. But if you've wanted an outdoor shower that won't cost thousands to install, the Camplux Pro is a great option for a truly luxurious outdoor bathing experience.

Keep clean anytime, anywhere with the best portable showers

If you put some full strength, chlorine bleach into the fresh water, you could have a sanitary set-up. I believe it is 5 tablespoons (2.5 fluid ounces) for 5 gallons of water to sanitize it for washing . We turn this valve off in winter and drain to prevent freezing (we don’t use the shower or bike wash in winter) The pump has no on/off switch. It starts automatically when the pressure drops, and it shuts-off automatically when the appropriate pressure is reached. For example, using the sink (or shower, or whatever) creates a pressure drop; the pump senses it and runs until the pressure goes up again. That depends on how often you don’t mind having to empty it. As a guideline, we empty our 4 gallon grey water tank almost every day: Over the course of several summers, we got dirty and then got clean repeatedly. We spent months recreating, playing, and existing outside and spent more time cleaning up in the great outdoors than we would have dreamed. We cleaned dirty kayak bottoms, bathed dogs, and rinsed grubby feet. We set up a shower station for multiple weekends of trail work crews in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We lived outside for weeks on end with only these showers to keep us keep clean enough to blend in with all the folks with indoor plumbing. We tested everything about these showers and collected what we learned to compare each one to the others across five different metrics for a complete picture of what each is best suited for.Drill (4) 1/8 inch diameter holes through the Upstanding Rib Wall on the Trimmed Lid and the Basin Side Wall. Drill the holes at North, South, East, West) Washing a bike uses quite a lot of water, so we obviously don’t use it very frequently. But there are some occasions where the bike wash is a real life saver; removing a layer of mud from the down tube by hand is no fun!

The Basin also allows hands to be washed inside the basin's high side walls - keeping the falling spout water from splashing off your hands onto your pants. The included nozzle works just like a standard hose head. This may be all you need for cleaning gear, rinsing feet, or de-muddying the dog, but it isn't great for an actual shower. For that, you'll probably want the Yakima RoadShower FlexHead, which we also tested, giving you an efficient (if messily close-to-the-car) shower. Also, if you fill at home and leave the pump behind, you'll find the pressure drops precipitously as the tank empties, and refilling that pressure with a short-hosed bike pump is a challenge. These things aside, this is a fabulous option for weekend warriors or anyone constantly on the go. If you need a larger capacity, the RoadShower also comes in 7 and 10-gallon versions. In spite of what soap companies want to implant in our minds, going outside and getting dirty isn’t going to be the end of us. Even eating dirt every once in a while can be good for us ( seriously). If you’re trying to stay well-groomed and hygienic, however, you’re still going to have to clean off eventually — even in the great outdoors.Propane camp showers: Sometimes cold showers are great. But, nothing makes you feel human again in the woods like a long hot shower. Propane is the perfect way to achieve that. Use non-hardening, plastic-safe, non-toxic thread sealant (not lubricant). It’s a paste that does not dry and can be removed easily (not permanent). A newer option that recently caught our attention! It looks super classy, functional, and also convert as a shower head! Wait...there's a whistle on the play...Leadership refereering intervenes... a technical foul is called. The penalized scout is directed to go properly wash his hands. For a more elaborate alternative, LifeSaver’s Jerrycan Shower Attachment attaches to most jerrycan-style water jugs. If you’re the fancy sort who needs a legit hot shower, even off-grid, Coleman’s 5-Gallon Camp Shower is a straightforward plastic bag that uses nothing more than the sun’s rays to deliver a nice hot shower. How many gallons for a camp shower?

Most portable showers feature a similar design, including a water reservoir and a means to deliver that water, be it by gravity or a dedicated pump. Here are the five main styles of portable showers for camping: If we were to use the van exclusively in summer, we might consider installing our tank outside the van, underfloor. Installing the tank underfloor frees garage space AND improves the van handling because it lowers the center of gravity. The dowels (glued into holes in the wood base) allow the bulb to move up and down freely when pumped. The open top of the dowels make for easy installation and removal of the bulb for storage. It totally depends on your usage and how many days of autonomy (without having to fill) you want. As a rough guideline and to help you make your calculations, here is our usage living full-time in the van:It’s easy to cut, easy to connect, and easy to route (flexibility: 5″ minimum radius for 1/2″ diameter PEX). That being said, we fill our 25 gallon tank every 4-5 days in summer (depending on showers). Every 7-10 days in winter (we shower in aquatic centers or gyms and try to fill our 1L water bottles as often as we can in public places). The reducer fitting will be trapped in location on the Spout by the two sections of tubing; yet free to spin and thread onto the Spout Riser.
