It’s a story that delights in its quirky setting but thrives on its honest and earnest characters. A forty-year-old man visiting a school of marginalized orphans, which happens to include, among others, a strange green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist. It’s certainly an eclectic bunch, but by the end of the story, you’ll love every one of them. Verdict: Interesting enough to finish it. Mildly recommend as long as you don’t mind a little bit of sappiness and drifting around in a story that should do better to keep to it’s central theme. For one long second, she looks at the camera. Long enough that there is no mistaking her. That straight, straight blonde hair, cut now into a sleek bob that just grazes her shoulders, her tilted dark eyes and slashes of cheekbone, that fat Angelina Jolie mouth. Everyone always fussed over her beauty, and it’s that combination of dark and light, angles and softness that does it. She’s an exact mix of our parents.

The story: The obvious expected question of the tale is not whether Kit will find Josie but what happens when she does. We are all traveling the path to get to this climatic moment in the story, but the path to get there is kind of like driving down Lombard Street in San Francisco-lots of curves to get from one point to another. I haven’t really read anything yet that I would consider an outright beach read simply because our weather hasn’t been all that consistently sunny lately, but it is supposed to be this weekend, so I’m debating between reading something by Morgan Matson, Sarah Morgan, or a middle-grade summer set story told in verse.

I can’t count the number of times people drew and photographed and painted her, men and women, and how often they fell in love. I always thought she would be a movie star. When I was a teen, I read an article in National Geographic about walking the Appalachian Trail and thought, I need to do that. I grew up in an outdoorsy family and married a man who loved the outdoors even more. But we never got to an adventure until we were empty nesters. In our late fifties we decided to walk 1400 miles from the cold North Sea to the warm Mediterranean on the legendary long-distance trail the GR5. After finishing our epic journey, I needed to share my love of European walking with others. This sounds fascinating. I’m curious about what started the downfall of the family all those years ago and why she faked her death. I lift the Mountain Dew all the way to my lips and take a long swallow of the thing we shared, this private reminder of all we were to each other, and tell myself it’s just wishful thinking. They were quite dependent on men, but wished to marry men to whom they were attracted. Elinor and Marianne do find these men, but both are thwarted in their relationships. Elinor helps Marianne see that her love interest is a cad, but she can do nothing about her own love for Edward, until he loses his inheritance. Zoe, a sometime artist, is from California. Martin, an engineer, is from Yorkshire. Both have ended up in picturesque Cluny, in central France. Both are struggling to come to terms with their recent past - for Zoe, the death of her… But now they are both adults. And both still scarred. Both, in their own ways, isolated because of it. Kit, whose life has come to be confined to her ER practice, her surfing, and her cat. While Josie, who seemingly has it all, is isolated by her secrets. No one knows her true self. Her past is another country, on another continent, and it happened to someone else. Another distraction is an old house on an overlook that Mari’s husband (another uninteresting character) buys for her as a surprise. The house carries a secret related to a death/murder that happened long ago, one we are told about later in the story. There is also a great deal of time spent describing this house. The whole set-up has nothing to do with the main story. If it were left out, the main story would carry on without impact. Charming and absorbing' Daily Mail 'Sleepless in Seattle meets Wild . . . Once Kit gets to New Zealand, rather than marching forward to find her sister, she gets caught in a love affair with Javier, a rather cardboard character who says little but touches Kit in variously well-described ways. The relationship seems a sideshow (one of those curves on Lombard Street) to the overall novel and gets in the way in the first third of the book. Maybe it’s someone for Kit to interact with during the scenes where she would have been alone. Javier is a singer/guitarist star of some sort who only seems to have to perform if he wants to and is hanging around New Zealand for no apparent purpose other than to show up in scenes in this book.She lives in the beautiful city of Colorado Springs with her beloved, a British endurance athlete who vows he’ll never lose his accent. When we are young, we believe in the impossible. It is built into us. And as we grow older, the childhood glasses come off and we are faced with harsh realities and painful truths. When We Believed in Mermaids by Barbara O’Neal tells us of two sisters torn apart by years of tragedy and loss – shifting viewpoint from one girl to the other throughout the novel – coming together as a truly beautiful story. Certain parts are very difficult to get through (a young girl is sexually assaulted on more than one occasion) but this is one that is definitely worth reading. Without spoiling too much, the story shows how two sisters can overcome the difficulties of a dysfunctional family and environment…and survive or even grow later in their lives. In the end, it does include a healthy dose of forgiveness and redemption, leaving us with the satisfying ending most readers desire. Stopping by my tiny Santa Cruz house, 1,350 square feet on the edge of an almost-not-great neighborhood, I scramble into my wet suit, feed the worst cat in the world his half can of wet food, and make sure to move my fingers around in his kibble. He purrs his thanks, and I pull his tail gently. “Try not to pee on anything too important, huh?”
