Description

My favorite character was probably the girl Gracie's mother. She is not having an easy time of it, as I'm sure not many women had during both world wars, but she still manages to be very caring and stubborn in all the right ways. Really liked her. And aunt Mildred! Cool women! Suitable for children working towards/at the expected standard in Y5/6, the questions are closely linked to the National Curriculum and therefore adequately develop their comprehension skills. It can be used as a guided reading text, an assessment piece or as an introduction to the text in general. With the opening extract included, this comprehension resource includes questions and answers for this popular text by Michael Morpurgo.

Then they see a light that leads them to an island that they know is Samson. They were cursed. David Wood, chair of Action for Children’s Arts, said Morpurgo is “one of our greatest storytellers”.Daniel Pender—Daniel is a handy boy, but he is also adventurous and social. Why the Whales Came is a children's story written by Michael Morpurgo [1] and first published in 1985 by William Heinemann (UK) and Scholastic (US). Clemmie Jenkins—The mother of Gracie who possesses a calm but "weird" personality. Not so much an actor in the story, but she is really fearful. In November 2016 Michael Morpurgo won the J M Barrie Award for his contribution to children’s literature. This award is given every year by Action for Children’s Arts to a “children’s arts practitioner” whose lifetime’s work has delighted children and will stand the test of time. Why the Whales Came' is about ten-year-old Gracie Jenkins, who lives on Bryher, a small island off the western coast of Britain, in the year 1914. "You keep away from the Birdman," Gracie's Father had warned her. The Birdman lives alone in a cottage that stands all by itself on a hill in the south part of the island. Gracie's father knows stories about him that he thinks are too horrible to tell her. The Birdman used to live on Samson Island, which people say has a curse on it.Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments
