Each way of life brings with it its own beauty and challenge. Most of the time, yes, I am happier, and I have mostly circumvented the stresses of modern life. That said, I’ve acquired a couple of the struggles of ancient life. But I think contentment is something healthier to aim for than happiness. Will and Olivia have moved from Wales to New York City for his work. Whilst he spends long hours working, Olivia is getting to know her neighbourhood and the city. One day, however, she discovers that he has been having an affair, and it may well still be on-going. Meanwhile, it’s all set in wild and vast Alaska. I know it sounds like a book about fish, but it’s seriously worth the read.

Wilderness by B.E. Jones | Goodreads

She elicits our sympathy even as we watch her actions spiral from stalking Will’s paramour to spiking her drinks, sending her nasty text messages and leaving compromising photographs in her work place. Joe and his climbing partner are mountain climbing in South America, attempting a first ascent. On the descent, there is a terrible storm, Joe is injured and from there on it’s just disaster-miracle-disaster-miracle. If you’re planning a trip to the great outdoors and want to learn how to survive in the wilderness, “Thrive: Long-Term Wilderness Survival Guide; Skills, Tips, and Gear for Living on the Land” is a must-read book. Cooking with Fire is different from the crowd of BBQ and grilling books as it tells you how to grill amazing meals while camping or hiking. We ask experts to recommend the five best books in their subject and explain their selection in an interview. On the summit day, a huge storm hits and those who did not abide by the 2:00 pm turnaround time get caught in it. Over the next day, eight people die, including Rob Hall. Jon does extensive research to support the personal account of what happened and he interviews survivors after the fact. There’s tension when his climbing partner must decide whether to stay or abandon his partner. You’ll hold your breath as Joe dangles over a crevasse, about to drop. If you have high blood pressure, maybe don’t read this book. But if you love to be kept up at night on the edge of your seat, you’ll love this book. The men in Olivia’s life are just vile. In fact, most of our main players in this story don’t have many redeemable qualities yet I was still able to empathise deeply with our main character. Wilderness is an entertaining thriller that really gets you enraged at some points and is thought provoking at others. It’s a little different than your standard feminine rage/revenge story as Olivia is not quite the cunning femme fatale she might like to think she is! The authors weaves quite an intricate tale without the facts getting swallowed up in themselves and the twists are the kind that you can get involved with, puzzling them out as you move through the story. Exactly what I look for in a thriller. Let me play detective please.

I have mixed feeling with Beyond the trees, I like that his trip is up north as I can relate because I live in the Yukon but there a bit too much of “nobody has done this river like I’m doing it and bla bla bla) I could die here and this and that” sort of feel a bit egocentric especially from the second half of the book. Olivia and her husband Will, head to the States for a break, for a chance to heal their marriage after Will’s affair. But Olivia can’t stop thinking that she can never trust him again and she can’t forgive him for what he has done. As dark thoughts crowd in, a plan starts to hatch inside her head, but she doesn’t realise the disastrous consequences it’ll have for them both. But Liv is not the only troubled character in this book, demons seem to haunt everyone, secrets are everywhere and it is impossible to know whose version of events to trust and who is telling the truth. The author builds up such a complex web of lies and deceit that, even the most heinous of characters end up with seemingly ‘reasonable’ justification for their immoral behaviour and one of the main questions becomes, who are the real bad guys here, and who amongst them deserves the consequences they end up suffering. Being able to make the reader feel some sympathy and solidarity with characters who are less than clean cut takes some skill, and is brilliantly done here. Or you can discover how B E Jones gained inspiration for the book during her own holiday adventures hiking among majestic mountains and canyons. Standing on the rim of one canyon she began to imagine how someone with murderous intent might act in a moment of madness. I think if I were her partner, I’d be rather nervous what the was thinking of when I was just enjoying the scenery. Wilderness by B E Jones: FootnotesNOLS Expedition Planning will also help outdoor enthusiasts plan food and fuel requirements, how to prepare mentally and physically for the hardships faced in the great wilderness.
