About this deal

Central heating can be a problem for citrus trees in winter, as they don’t like a dry atmosphere. To increase the humidity level around your tree, stand it on a tray filled with gravel, and top up with water to just below the surface of the gravel. Open greenhouse vents on sunny spring days when temperatures inside can soar. Citrus trees need balanced nourishment in summer and winter so top up soil with the nutrients of our winter citrus feed every few waterings for an extra boost. It will help aid your tree in growing a strong crop of fruits and protects the foliage during colder months.

Citrus trees don’t tolerate wet soil at any point of the year but this is especially important during the winter months. As the weather is cooler and your tree isn’t growing as strongly you can reduce watering to every few weeks or only water when the top soil feels dry to the touch. Stand pots on clay feet to improve drainage. You can buy these from garden centres or save money by using broken tiles or similar to raise the base off the pots off the ground. Use a soft rake to clear leaves that have fallen on the soil. These can be added to the leaf bin as long as they are healthy. Lemons. The tart fruits of the lemon tree (Citrus limon) are damaged when temperatures drop below 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Blossoms and young fruit die at 29 degrees. When temperatures reach 22 to 24 degrees, the tree’s leaves are damaged and will drop. What kind of soil do lemon trees like? In all but very mild areas, citrus trees are best grown in pots so that they can be moved indoors in winter. Plant in pots filled with a soil-based compost like John Innes no 2, with added sharp sand or grit for drainage. Use four parts compost to 1 part sand or grit.Branches that grow inwards or cross each other can cause overcrowding on the inner part of the plant. This restricts light and airflow from reaching the inner canopy and can leave your tree more susceptible to infections and pests. Lemon trees do need a lot of light to flourish, aim for bright indirect sunlight for around 6 hours a day.

Apply on a monthly basis between October and March. Simply mix the feed with water and apply to the plants when the compost has dried out, remember to not overwater in the winter months. Citrus Feed – Winter should be mixed with water as instructed and applied to citrus plants when the compost has dried out. Citrus plants should not be over-watered during the colder months. NB: Do not make leaf mould using diseased leaves, rose leaves - which often harbour diseases - or evergreen foliage, which takes a long time to break down. However, when the weather starts to get a little warmer, it important to switch over to our Summer citrus feed. This feed contains nitrogen based nutrients which is necessary for foliage growth, whereas the winter feed contains more potassium and phosphorus for a healthy crop of fruits. If yes, move your tree away from any doors, windows or windowsills that could be causing fluctuations in the room's temperature. Sow seeds fresh from ripe fruit at a depth of about 1cm (½in) in John Innes seed or multi-purpose compost at a temperature of 16°C (61°F). Lumpy swellings along the stems of citrus trees are an indication of Citrus Gall Wasp. Citrus Gall Wasp ( Bruchophagus fellis) is native to warm coastal areas in New South Wales and Queensland but has also become an increasing problem in Victoria and Western Australia. Its original host was the native Australian Finger Lime but can also seriously affect other citrus including Lemons, Grapefruit and Oranges. The compost should be consistently moist but never soggy or left standing in water. Your lime tree will not tolerate having “wet feet” and soil that is left wet for too long can lead to root rot - a bacterial infection that slowly eats away at a plant’s roots and can be fatal.

As the weather and day length changes, so does the care that your citrus trees need. Because sometimes All prices shown below are per parcel with a maximum weight of 30 kg per parcel. Items over 30 kg are split into multiple boxes and charged per box. Another way to increase nutrients is to repot your tree, renewing the compost that it’s growing in. This can either be into the same container, or a larger one if you plan on potting up. In their natural, outdoor environment, lime trees can often reach heights of up to 6ft when left unpruned. Growing them indoors in a smaller pot helps to keep them at a manageable size so they won’t outgrow your space. Vitax Winter Citrus Feed is a soluble fertiliser. It works as a specialist winter Citrus feed, providing all your Citrus plants a balanced nutritional feed over the colder months. With a proper watering schedule, your lemon tree will thrive. Properly caring for your tree includes incorporating a combination of watering and feeding techniques. Lemon trees require watering regularly. If your tree is starting to lose its flowers, leaves or unripe fruit then the soil is too dry. Plants can be placed outdoors in summer, from mid-June to late September, if sheltered from cold winds. At other times, keep them in a cool greenhouse or conservatory. Citrus are not ideal houseplants, as the heat and dry atmosphere can cause scorch. Once dahlias have been ruined by frost cut down stems to about five inches above grown and either lift and store the tubers over winter or mound them over with straw or mulch to protect them from frost. Citrus are frost tender plants and temperatures below 7°C (45°F) may cause damage or even death. For this reason, in most parts of the UK, it is best to grow citrus in containers that can be moved to a warmer position over winter. Clear away slimy rotting foliage but leave other stems standing to provide winter interest and somewhere for overwintering insects.
