About this deal

Regulation 514.12 (Notices: periodic inspection and testing) now contains an exception for domestic (household) premises in certain situations. Chapter 51: are Common rules that may apply to all electrical installations and concerns the operational conditions, conductor colours and labelling.

The first two parts are your guide to the book. They provide you with the ‘scope’ of the Regs, explaining what’s included, what the basic principles of electrical installations are, and providing you with definitions of the most commonly used terms within the book. The information covered in this section is general and related to fundamental principles you will need to adopt prior to beginning design work. Regulation 443.5 (Risk assessment method) has been deleted and Annex A443 (examples of calculated risk level CRL for use of SPDs) has also been deleted. Section 514 - Identification and notices Heating conductors and cables Regulations 554.4.2, 554.4.3, and 554.4.4 have been deleted. Chapter 64 - Initial verification Escape routes and fire protection (informative). Cables in protected escape routes and fire sealing of cable penetrations within buildings.

The technical content of this section has been extensively revised and expanded. Requirements of this section now apply to:

18th Edition Resources

There have been some structure changes, including the introduction of a new chapter (chapter 46) and a rework of chapter 53. The above examples could be produced in alignment with any ‘part’ of the 18th edition book. However, this set of inspection and testing guidelines serve to offer an insight into format, content style, and tone of questioning across the full examination. This understanding should be carried into revision endeavours on all topics included within the 18th edition book. Developing new, and amending existing regulations ahead of the next edition of the Wiring Regulations is a rigorous process. It not only involves standardisation with CENELEC and IEC regulations, but there is also a public consultation period or draft for public consideration (DPC). The DPC period is three months long, and means members of the UK public can offer comments for consideration ahead of a final draft and publication. Part 6: What inspections and tests should be done to show it’s safe and the certificates to be used.

Protection of conductors in parallel against overcurrent (informative). Parallel conductor protection against overload and short-circuit.

the requirement for the fire safety design of buildings to be documented where specific conditions of external influence exist, such as protected escape routes and locations with risk of fire; There’s eight Parts including the new Part 8, Functional Requirements and seventeen Appendices, however, Appendices 7 and 12 are empty, leaving just fifteen in this latest version of BS7671. Regulation 651.1 defines when this testing and inspection is applicable, encouraging electricians to ask one key question: is the installation or circuit safe for continued use? Amendment 2 comes into effect immediately when published on 28th March 2022 and the previous version, BS 7671:2018+A1:2020, will be withdrawn six months later. Candidates must be aware that ‘Initial Verification’ is only practicable in the first instance of electrical installation. Any future testing of this circuit should be referred to under the periodic inspection banner. Initial Verification

Classification of external influences (informative). Classification codes and guidance for environmental conditions that affect electrical installations. Regulation 531.3.3 now states that RCD Type AC shall only be used to serve fixed equipment, where it is known Overvoltage protection is now required in circumstances where there is a risk of serious injury or loss of life, disruption to commercial and industrial activity or interruption of public services. The IET’s (Institute of Engineering and Technology) Requirements for Electrical Installations goes by many aliases; the 18th Edition, BS7671:2018, the Big Blue Book, Wiring Regs, or simply the Regs. But regardless of what you call it, one thing is for sure – if you’re involved in the design, installation or maintenance of electric wiring, you’re going to need it. Regulation 443.4.2 requires protection against overvoltages to be considered in the case of equipment likely to produce switching overvoltages or disturbances and gives conditions.
