Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Part of Granny's rant. " That is the root and heart and soul and center of witchcraft, that is. The soul and center! The... soul... and... center!"

Terry Pratchett in quotes: 15 of the best

Poltergeist: Inverted. Ms Level's cottage is "haunted" by a spirit of obsessive tidiness, which she dubs an ondageist. I seriously love his version of witches who barely ever use actual magic but instead show how pointless it often is anyway since you can use headology or just plain common sense. Actually listening to people, actually seeing things, actually paying attention, caring and applying some knowledge (medicine and other kinda scientific methods) while working people (no, not WITH people *lol*). Taking responsibility when nobody else wants to. Gets to me every time. And it's one of the reasons why the books involving Granny and other witches are my favourites of the series. Yes, still and always.Evil Is Not a Toy: The Hiver is noted to be dangerous for any spellcaster or wizard not because of its intelligence, but because it has no intelligence and therefore is Too Dumb to Fool with any countermeasures designed to stop smarter beings. I'm trying to have a moment o' existential dreed here, right? Crivens, it's a puir lookout if a man canna feel the chilly winds o' fate lashing aroound his netheres wi'out folks telling him he's deid, eh?” Tiffany Aching is ready to begin her apprenticeship in magic, but life isn't exactly what she thought it would be. A Hat Full of Sky continues Terry Pratchett’s brilliant look into the world of a young witch: this time, with more angst." (Fantasy Book Review)

Granny Weatherwax no longer needs any kind of introduction or summary. But it is important to note that Tiffany herself has already become a very special character - and this is only her second book! She might be only 11 in this volume, but she's already thoroughly fleshed out, has her head and heart in the right place and I'm now convinced where this is headed (I had a hunch before but this made it clear, though I don't want to think about it yet). She's smart, quirky, loveable, headstrong ... a proper hag. ;)

The spirit named Oswald is an ondageist - a ghost with an obsession for cleaning. "Geist " means ghost in German. "Onda means 'wave' in Spanish but has also come to mean 'flow' or 'essence' (especially in Mexican Spanish). "Ontology" is the branch of metaphysics dealing with the nature of being or existence. Some sources suggest that Pratchett is playing on "Lee Harvey Oswald" with Oswald's name because "Harvey" was an invisible rabbit in a movie of the same name and this Oswald is also invisible. Lee Harvey Oswald was the assassin who murdered US president John F Kennedy on Nov 22, 1963 and Pratchett has used JFK references in other novels. Malum, Terry’i Terry yapan en büyük özelliği karakter yaratmadaki tartışılmaz marifeti. Bu güvenin hakkını veriyor ve yine pişman etmiyor bizleri. Son derece güçlü, gerçek, sayfalardan taşan, kendilerine özgü, okurken tanımak ve konuşmak arzusuyla dolmanıza sebep olan karakterlere sarılmış macera bir kez daha. Pratchett's third children's novel set in the Discworld, and the second to feature wannabe witch Tiffany Aching and the Wee Free Men, is so ridiculously well written and consistently funny it makes you wonder how he can keep writing such superlative novels without cheating a bit. It would be reassuring to think that the Carnegie Medal-winning author of The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents and The Wee Free Men had his own small army of professional helpers, not unlike like a US sitcom, inventing and deliberating about which are the best jokes and plot lines to use to ensure the best quality quotient. But it's all his own work and that makes each brilliant novel more remarkable because of it. The average Feegle man (Feegle women are rare – see later) is about six inches high, red haired, his skin turned blue with tattoos and the dye called woad, and, since you’re this close, he’s probably about to hit you.

Talking the Monster to Death: Quite literally. At the end, Tiffany has to help the hiver learn how to die. The Kelda's ability to access the Genetic Memory of her female ancestors is straight out of Dune, but unlike the Bene Gesserit, she doesn't need access to male ancestral memories to expand this ability into calculating the future as well, since here it's explicitly magic and she can also communicate through time with her own descendants as well. Homage: The Hiver shares many characteristics with the Brollochan, a similar possessing spirit depending for its sensory input on forcibly occupying the bodies of living things, in Alan Garner's The Moon of Gomrath. Tiffany took a deep breath. This was about words, and she knew about words. ‘Here is a story to believe,’ she said. ‘Once we were blobs in the sea, and then fishes, and then lizards and rats and then monkeys, and hundreds of things in between. This hand was once a fin, this hand once had claws! In my human mouth I have the pointy teeth of a wolf and the chisel teeth of a rabbit and the grinding teeth of a cow! Our blood is as salty as the sea we used to live in! When we’re frightened the hair on our skins stands up, just like it did when we had fur. We are history! Everything we’ve ever been on the way to becoming us, we still are. Would you like the rest of the story?’ I dinna like this, Rob,' said a Feegle. 'It's too quiet.''Aye, Slightly Sane Georgie, it is that-''You are my sunshine, my only su-''Daft Wullie!' snapped Rob, without taking his eyes off the strange landscape. The second in beloved and bestselling fantasy grandmaster Sir Terry Pratchett's beloved Discworld novels starring the young witch Tiffany Aching. This is technically a young adult book (and yes, I do read grown-up books, I just went on a bit of a YA tear after my Powell’s extravaganza), but the only reason for so labeling it is that the main character is a teenager. It is hard to explain how great this book is if you haven’t read any Pratchett, but, then again, why haven’t you read any Pratchett? His books about the Discworld started out a pun-filled parodies of fantasy novels, and have evolved into satires on our modern world that usually leave me with more profound thinking to do afterward that most “serious fiction.” A Hat Full of Sky is a sequel to The Wee Free Men and is about Tiffany Aching’s apprenticeship as a witch, far from her home on the chalk country. It’s also about being true to yourself, whoever you are and accepting the good of yourself with the bad, and trusting your instincts. But it isn’t hokey, or preachy, just true. And funny as hell – I will never stop laughing at the Wee Free Men. Conservation of Ninjutsu: Or of Witchcraft, oddly. At the Witch Trials there's scores of witches present, and when something bad happens they all shout, rush about and don't do anything useful at all. The 'mystery' of Miss Level conjures up all the traditional images of the evil witch in the cottage in the woods and gets Tiffany's mind racing - wondering if the beef stew is made of the last girl who stayed there.

The Nac Mac Feegle are the most dangerous of the fairy races, particularly when drunk. They love drinking, fighting, and stealing, and will in fact steal anything that is not nailed down. If it is nailed down, they will steal the nails as well. Granny Weatherwax: Then you'll face me. You'll face me, on my ground. But that won't happen, will it?Rain don't fall on a with if she doesn't want it to, although personally I prefer to get wet and be thankful.""Thankful for what?" said Tiffany. My daughter and I decided to listen the the Tiffany Aching series on our roadtrip to Atlanta, Georgia. We had already completed the first one, so as we started out this morning, we loaded the second one, A Hat Full of Sky on my iPod. It has been so much fun to listen to the combination of wit and wisdom wonderfully read by Stephen Briggs. Here are the quotes that caught our ears especially as we travelled:
