About this deal

I really loved the way this book dealt with friends and standing up for yourself and other people and the bravery it takes to be yourself and not ashamed for liking things and having interests and finding friends that like you for you and share similar or the same interests!!! So happy Safiya found True Friends!!! Also glad they had a Studio Ghibli movie marathon! Saff, your mum said I could come round tonight for dinner,’ Elle says when she finally catches up with me.

A Pocketful of Stars – HarperCollins Publishers UK

Elle and I don’t speak. She just squeezes my arm every few moments. I don’t cry, but my heart is beating so fast I feel like I can’t breathe. Every chapter has to have a purpose and progress the story in some way. It’s such a simple piece of advice that has had a huge impact on my writing. Ahhhhh I just finished this book, and I am in tears, but it was an absolutely perfect ending. This whole book is so full of heart and magic. Safiya is a 14-year-old girl in London, obsessed with her favorite video game (an imagined one that sounds really fabulous!), splitting her time between her two loving divorced parents and trying to figure out the shifting rules of her relationship with her best friend as well as her increasingly fraught relationship with her mum. They used to have so much fun together, but now they're always at loggerheads and don't seem able to understand each other at all... Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.I never struggle for something to say, my mind is always busy with thoughts, and I am quite acutely aware of my emotions. Safiya is different. She’s not always aware of how she’s feeling, and she often can’t find the words to express it. But she also has a strength inside of her that I know we all hold, waiting to come out when it matters, and that’s why I hope she will appeal to readers. I think it’s an important book for kids to read so they can evaluate their friendships and also remember to say I Love You yo their parents and not let their anger get the better of them. Elle’s like a chameleon, she always knows what to say. She changes personalities depending on who she’s around and can talk to just about anyone, like Mum. I’m just a plain old lizard, darting into the corner of every room I enter. Their willingness to listen and take on my changes. Quite far into the process (before I combined Safiya’s gaming interests with the quest), when I was supposed to have finished my structural edits, I realised the book wasn’t working. Liz and Sarah listened to my concerns and let me try something experimental. They helped me get to the essence of what I was trying to do as we moved into the next edit. It was at that point that the book came together. I’ll always be grateful for their patience, and their faith in my ideas.

A Pocketful of Stars by Aisha Bushby - Goodreads

I’m currently working on my second book, and it’s interesting to see how that has shifted. Writing is now, rather bizarrely, my job, and one I love more than I can say, but there are also expectations and deadlines and, with all of that, stress. So, I’ve tried my best to turn to other creative outlets, to help me when I’m struggling to write.

That being said, the ending did make me cry quite a bit (multiple tears!) so that is a point in it's favour. The main character, Safiya, seems to mature quite a bit through the book, especially for someone her age (I believe she is around 13?), and in my opinion was a pretty solid narrator. While the end broke my heart, I was surprised to learn that Safiya was supposed in be in Year 8 because she acted and behaved much younger. My Year 8 students would cringe at some of the things she said and did. The Branford Boase judges said :‘I love the voice, and the story brought me to tears’; ‘Safiya is a very well rounded, developed character’; ‘a really clever idea, and the story is so well told’; ‘she makes the magic credible’; ‘I was so impressed by the way the friendships developed’. A Pocketful of Stars (Audio Download): Aisha Bushby, Lara

This book is beautiful, filled with love and also quietly devastating, in a way that feels so true and honest. It is a book that will feed your heart and soul. This young globular cluster can be seen from the southern hemisphere, in the Dorado constellation, which is Portugese for dolphinfish. Usually, globular clusters contain stars which are born at the same time; however, NGC 1805 is unusual as it appears to host two different populations of stars with ages millions of years apart. Observing such clusters of stars can help astronomers understand how stars evolve, and what factors determine whether they end their lives as white dwarfs, or explode as supernovae. I think I wanted to be a writer before I really knew myself that I did. It was just something I said I would do. I remember declaring, when I was younger, that I was going to write fantasy novels when I grew up. It was during the time I first discovered Harry Potter and Eragon. This is a magical realism middle-grade book about a girl who struggles in her relationship with her mum. She is disconnected from her heritage. She struggles in her friendships. And then it happens. Her mum suffers a stroke and falls into a coma.

About Aisha Bushby

My biggest criticism with this book is that it is too short, and feels like it ends too soon. I am all for shorter books, not every book needs to be the next Eragon or what have you, but in all honesty I was more interested in the side plotline than the main one, and I felt like it wasn't wrapped up particularly well. Safyia's mother has a stroke and is in a coma. Safyia feels like it's her fault because the last time she saw her mother they argued. On one of her visits to the hospital, Safyia falls asleep by her mum's bed and something strange happens and she feels as if she has been transported to her mum's birthplace in Kuwait. Mum’s good at talking to people, being a lawyer. She knows exactly what to say at all times. I’m different. I only know how to express myself in video games. Instead of words, I use spells and incantations. anyways this is a really beautiful book about family and friendship and growing up and saying goodbye and also dealing with grief and loss.
