LW: Well I am obsessed with Cornwall it’s a problem… My mum’s side of the family are from Cornwall and my grandparents lived in Cornwall as I was growing up so we used to go there all the time. It’s a really special place for me like I have a real affection for it. But also specifically in Cornwall there are places that the book is about and the main place is St. Michael’s Mount which is in Marazion in Cornwall and that’s what the Cardew island is based on so it’s like the island that’s joined to the mainland by the causeway and when the tide comes in like it’s cut off and when the tide goes out then you can walk across to it and when I saw that I just knew that I had to write something about it because it feels really magical it has that kind of magical quality that I wanted the book to have. LH: With the dresses especially they sound like something out of a dream as well just they fit so well into the parties and everything. If you were to be going to one of the parties in A Sky Painted Gold, which dress that you created would you want to wear?

A Sky Painted Gold by Laura Wood - LoveReading4Kids

Also there is a conversation between Lou and Freya that I may have teared up at because it slightly hit close to home with figuring out some things about my own future- but in a good way. But, as she grows closer to the Cardews, is she abandoning her own ambitions… And is there something darker lurking at the heart of the Cardew family? As elegant and energising as a flute of fine champagne, this enchanting novel sees 17-year-old Cornish farmer’s daughter and aspiring writer Lou embrace the dizzy decadence of 1920’s aristocracy, with life-changing results. It’s snowing again," I murmur, dazed. Flat flakes drift in drowsy curlicues to settle in Kit’s hair, on his dark wool coat, to melt against my warm cheeks. In the early evening light, the world around us is fairy-touched, shining silver."

LW: Yeah although I think it’s really nice how into the clothes everyone gets about it like I think everyone really… it’s such a special period for fashion and everyone really likes it. Also, with the tour going up to Yorkshire, I was thrilled by it. I'm proudly from East Yorkshire and we have great scenery and the best coastal locations. Hearing Runleigh was based on Whitby was really nice- last summer, the fam went out for a day trip there- my first time in years- and it's well worth a visit. While it's famous for Dracula, the abbey and its 199 steps are worth seeing, but there's so much more to it than that! In terms of Lou’s family, she finds herself almost escaping them after her sister, Alice, gets married. Everyone tells her that she’ll be next but she realises that she wants something different for herself. This causes a gap between her and Alice even though she’d previously always been her shadow, and it really adds to the overall story. Oh and I can’t help but laugh when the characters are dancing. I know it’s supposed to be glamorous and romantic but I can’t get this gif out of my head.

The lights strung above us in a looping zigzag shine white against a royal blue sky. We’re walking further into a residential bit of the city, and the windows in the tall houses glow, warm and welcoming. Some contain glimpses of decorated trees, of brightly coloured paper chains, and jewel-like glass ornaments.

A Sky Painted Gold - a gloriously sun-drenched coming-of-age

As for Caitlin and Robert? Definitely was intrigued right from the bat. She obviously struggles with past events and he had this mysterious air throughout the entire book. Loved it! I liked this just as much as A Sky Painted Gold (dare I say... more?!) - it was so lovely to see more of Lou and Robert, too. Especially a certain telegram... Laura Wood is the winner of the Montegrappa Scholastic Prize for New Children's Writing and the author of the 'Poppy Pym' and 'Vote for Effie' middle-grade series and YA novels, A Sky Painted Gold and Under a Dancing Star.Another stunning read from Laura Wood - her writing never ceases to blow me away, beautiful, captivating and honest. This book talks about mental health, diversity in theatre, race representation in theatre and dreams/goals.

Laura Wood’s first young adult book is a three-star read for me. This book is a good summer read, and I encourage you to read it this time of the year. We all know that I love an English setting, so this one did it for me in that regard! I don’t think that I have read a book, other than The Great Gatsby, that is set in the 1920s, I think it is an interesting time period and I don’t know much about what was happening in England at this time. The parties in this book were very atmospheric, I wish that I could witness something so grand! This was pitched to me as The Great Gatsby meets I Capture the Castle and I can see that... but this book is a mere shadow of both of those books. It takes, in my opinion, only half of what makes these classics good and adds a romance and very typical coming-of-age plot. Specifically what I mean is this: ASPG takes the glitz and glam of Gatsby, but doesn’t recreate the dirty, lonely, messy parts of Gatsby. It tries to emphasize that the glitz is all just a mask (very heavy-handedly so might I add) for very sad people, but it misses the emptiness of Gatsby. The pointlessness of Gatsby. The aimlessness of Gatsby. The darkness. Same with I Capture the Castle; the best parts of this book is the uniquely unhealthy yet loving family (the family of ASPG is very loving and healthy and whole) and the mistakes and messiness of Cassandra (Lou has none of that, which makes her a whole lot less interesting to read about). I guess what I’m getting at is I love classics because of the grit, the bite, they have. This book took the image of classics and tried to recreate the feel of them, but failed for me, in part because it did not have this realistic bite to it. And the problem is that ~bite~ is what makes classics memorable. And so this, while not a poorly written book, was just boring and forgettable to me. Louise – Lou – lived in small Cornish village with her parents, her elder sister Alice, who was happily getting ready to marry her childhood sweetheart and several younger siblings. She were a happy, lively and loving family, and it was lovely to look into their home and their lives. With this one, I don’t think I need to do a lot of explaining. This is the graphic novel for episodes I-III of the Star Wars Saga. Unpopular opinion but I love the prequels, they are my favorite movies in the whole series. How can you not love a book with an opening line like that!? It's warm and sweet and funny, with a delightful romance, although that element is more of a subplot to the main storyline of finding your place in the world. Her story is very well told, by her in the first person. Her voice was lovely, the story flowed beautifully. It was simple, but it was profound, and the things that it had to say felt utterly right. The post-war generation is caught perfectly, the period detail was pitch perfect, and that made it so easy to be drawn onto Lou’s life.
