Description

The game ends as soon as someone finishes their pyramid, then all players score their points. For each colour, you score points equal to the largest valued card in your pyramid. Additionally, for each colour, you look at the largest grouping of cards in your pyramid and you score 3 points for each of those cards. Whoever held the pearl majority card at game's end scores 5 points for it. Whoever has the highest score wins.

First, the game art, wow! More than 50 unique and beautiful pieces of art, each one a masterpiece, and only one artist ( Xavier Collette) responsible for them all, quite an achievement! Any Key tokens (gained by fighting Monsters) that you used are simply discarded and returned to the pile. If you gain multiple Key tokens at once, and you end up with more than three Keys in your possession (including any provided by Lords),you may choose which Keys you will use to take control of a Location.

Any player recruits a Lord and the Court needs to be refilled, but there are not enough Lord cards left to completely fill the Court. Players gain influence points (victory points) in several ways, but the core path involves exploring the depths to defeat monsters (worth random influence points) and gain allies; allies are used to then recruit lords (worth varying amounts of influence), and lords are used to control locations (which have their own criteria for gaining influence). To become the new King of the Abyss, you have to acquire the most influence points (victory points). Influence points are gained in a variety of ways from allies, lords, and locations. You can also earn influence points by slaying the great monsters that patrol the depths.

P.S.: If anyone has an experience with the expansions for this game, I’d love to hear your opinions in the comments!Final Score: 4 Stars – A great set collection game with some amazing artwork and solid mechanics. This one makes its way to my gaming table often. There is a limited amount of player interaction, mainly in the form of the lord powers, and whilst these include some ‘take-that’ moments, they are fairly light, and won’t ruin the game for players at the sharp end of this.

Next, a player will add the collected Lords to their Senate Chamber. The Senate Chamber will be created as an inverted pyramid, with five cards at the top, four cards under that and so on. Lords must be placed from left to right, top to bottom. If you add a Lord that you do not have the colour of already present in your Senate Chamber, then you take a coat of arms token and place it on the newly laid Lord. If the colour of the Lord is already present the coat of arms token is moved to the Lord with the most influence points. The Coat of Arms token (one for each colour) must always be on the most influential Lord. Master Of The Locations Place your chosen Location in front of you. Any Lords used to control that Location must be slid underneath it so that their Powers are covered-these Powers are no longer available for the rest of the game. Take one of the available face up Locations (remember: at the beginning of the game, there is only one face up Location available); or In my opinion, the rulebook would have been stronger if the “clarifying” section hit on each Lord and Location instead of just a handful. I can understand how different players might interpret some of these cards differently and we should never have to go to an auxiliary source to get accurate information. This aside, the rest of the rules are laid out perfectly and there are plenty of detailed pictures to help walk the user through the varying actions one might take. Depending on race, the Lords each belong to one of the 6 different guilds, each with their own specialty:Note: A player who controls a Lord decides at which point during their turn the Lord's semi-permanent Power is applied. Refill The Court: Full Upgrade Kit for Root - 108 Pieces | Board Game Accessories. Base Game + Riverfolk + Underworld Expansions (Unofficial) Firstly, there is no limit to the number of allies that a player can have in their hand, so it is difficult to physically hold them all. It is unclear if these are meant to be kept secret, but we find ourselves laying them out face-up so that it is easy for players (and other players) to see what they have. As long as everyone agrees to this we’ve never found it a problem. I can talk about the different types of cards, the game board, or the various tokens that come with the game, but the first thing that is going to hit you in the face is the absolutely STUNNING artwork in Abyss. Artist Xavier Collette did an amazing job with his illustrations. From the second you open up the box (which comes in 5 different covers), you are greeted with a variety of highly thematic visuals. From the variety on the Lord cards to the excellently illustrated game board (that shows the council chamber), I just loved everything about the artwork in Abyss. This is easily one of my favorites to come out in a long time. If the Power is marked with an arrow, it is applied only once, when the Lord is recruited. If there is no arrow, this Power is semi-permanent: it lasts until this Lord is used to control a Location (in which case the Power is hidden by the Location).

Abyss Review | Board Games | Zatu Games UK | Seek Your Adventure

The currency of the game is represented by opaque white pearls, which do a great job of carrying on the undersea theme. Players store their pearls in oyster shaped dishes, another great touch in line with the theme. Abyss has grown on me since my first impression when I thought it was just OK. Since then, I’ve played it many times and have come to absolutely love this game. Abyss combines its fantastic artwork with really solid mechanics that ended up really appealing to me. The rules are easy to teach, the game is allot of fun, and the length feels just about right. As soon as a player has three keys in their possession, either the keys shown on recruited lords, or keys gained from defeating monsters, they gain control over a location. Each location is represented by a hefty rectangular board, showing a scene from the ocean floor, and detailing how best to use it to score influence. There are two expansions for Abyss that are available. The first is the Bombyx Abyss: Kraken which brings in some more corruption in the form of silver pearls. These are worth negative points and can be spent as regular pearls but only if you have no “normal” pearls available to spend. So getting rid of them is tough, but the cards that give you them are simply so powerful. The additions to the game that this offers are relatively small and subtle, which you would expect from a small box expansion, but I do enjoy playing with it still as a shakeup to the base game. That’s the theme behind today’s review of Abyss, a eurogame designed by Bruno Cathala ( 5 Tribes, Shadows over Camelot) and Charles Chevallier ( Sultaniya), and published by Asmodee Games. Is this game of undersea strategy just a pretty face or does it have what it takes to earn a spot on your gaming shelf? Let’s find out! A few other additions the expansion brings is additional allies and lords, ability to play up to five players and a hand limit of 12 allies. Final Thoughts You may spend Pearls to help recruit: you must still play at least one Ally from each of the required Races, but if the sum of the card values is not high enough, you can spend one Pearl for each missing point (Pearls are paid to the Treasury). My recorded win rate in marvel champions is about 65%, which feels about right. More than anything I want wins to feel hard fought and losses to have felt winnable up until we got crushed, whatever...
