Maud Lilian "Queenie" Baxter is Bert's second wife. When Bert and Queenie meet, they are both widowers with children; Queenie has a son called Nathan, a daughter-in-law named Maria and two grandchildren, Jodie and Jason, living in Canada. Queenie is described as "loud", and she dyes her hair to make herself look younger. The couple's unofficial engagement causes scandal at Alderman Cooper; since the death of Thomas Bell, Bert is the only male resident at the home. Queenie dies following a stroke on 7 December 1982, at her and Bert's OAP's bungalow. Many messages appeared in the following morning's newspaper. Declan and Caitlin O'Leary are the heads of an Irish family over the road from the Mole family. Mr. O'Leary is a drunk and Mrs. O'Leary is a gossip. They have at least three children; namely Brendan, Sean and Bridget. In 1989 Townsend published Mr Bevan's Dream – Why Britain Needs its Welfare State, one of the series of Counterblast essays written by such authors as Paul Foot, Marina Warner and Fay Weldon which critiqued, either directly or indirectly the social consequences of Thatcherism. Frustrated, disappointed and undersexed, Adrian despairs until a letter from his past changes everything . . .

Townsend has held a mirror up to the nation and made us happy to laugh at what we see in it' Sunday Telegraph His final diary was his last. In an interview in the Guardian with Kate Kellaway in 2010, Sue said that “the only way I’ll kill Adrian is when I die myself”. Though we’ll never learn Adrian’s fate, his diagnosis of prostate cancer in the last book made for a potentially bleak future. Though Sue was working on a follow-up at the time of her death in April 2014 – provisionally titled Pandora’s Box - his final entry was made on Monday 5 May 2008, revealing that he would become a grandfather at 41 and hoping that we would “live long enough to see this child grow up”.

She enjoyed great success in the 1980s, with her Adrian Mole books selling more copies than any other work of fiction in Britain during the decade. The sensational final instalment in comic legend Sue Townsend's hilarious and iconic Adrian Mole series Richly comic ... stuffed full of humour, tragedy, vanity, pathos and, very occasionally, wisdom' Guardian Albert Adrian Mole is the lead protagonist of the “Adrian Mole” series of novels. He made his first appearance as Nigel in a comic diary in “Simply Magazine” and thereafter in a 1982 “BBC Radio 4” play. The books are written in diary form with some including correspondence as additional content. They provide a humorous and realistic depiction of the life of a teenage boy. They also capture the Thatcher-led zeitgeist of the UK that was one of the most pivotal moments in modern history. Mole was born in 1967 and was brought up in Leicester before he moved to the East Midlands small town of Ashby de la Zouch. He is born to lower middle class, working-class Englishmen and he lived as an only child for fifteen years before the birth of his siblings. He does well in school though he is not that gifted and often suffers from the ire of Pop Eye Scruton the headmaster. While he is not very popular, he has a girlfriend in Pandora Braithwaite and a small circle of loyal friends. He generally keeps out of trouble though he gets in with the wrong crowd at some point. He sees himself as a thwarted Great Writer – an intellectual and does write high-quality diary entries. However, he feels that he needs to adopt avant-garde or other high literary styles if he is to be taken seriously. Unsurprisingly, he has never had his works published. Townsend, in a 2009 Guardian interview with Alex Clark, described herself as a "passionate socialist" who had no time for New Labour. "I support the memory and the history of the party and I consider that these lot are interlopers", she told Clark. [13] Despite these comments, Townsend said in 1999 that she had only voted Labour once, and in fact her preference was "Communist, Socialist Workers, or a minority party usually." [5] The journalist Christina Patterson observed of Townsend in 2008: "Her heart, it's clear from her books and a few hours in her company, is still with the people she left behind, the people who go largely unchronicled in literature, the people who are still her friends."
