I was drawn into Eva’s story, and desperately wanted her to find the answers she was searching for. This is a beautifully written novel: painful in some parts, joyful in others. This is a love story to life, sisterhood, motherhood and self. The story is told from Eva’s perspective, from her wisely attuned observations as a child, right through to adulthood and all the ways in which she embodies a mother on the search for her own. It’s told, too, through letters to the lovely Bridget and the gorgeous Blume family as a whole, as well as through the whimsical presence of Carrie and hilarious Sister Ana. Eva has suspicions about her family and raises numerous questions and does some investigating throughout. This goes on for a number of years, along the way we meet some lovely characters and families and one or two not so lovely characters. This book was recommended to me by a very good friend of mine and I have to admit I had my prejudices. A novel about various types of mothers? A coming-of-age story about an ordinary Spanish woman? Home > This novel is like nothing I've ever read, and I've immediately bought the author's first book as I enjoyed this one so much. Eva’s search to find her “real mother” based on one photograph takes her to Córdoba in Spain. What a beautiful place!! The authors descriptions of Eva’s surroundings were perfect and have me longing to visit.

I just loved it. Eva (as in forever, not evil, she tells us early on) is searching for something. She knows that something is missing but isn’t entirely sure what. She just knows that she doesn’t belong in her family. This book chronicles her life and her desire to find love and happiness. Eva makes wonderful friends and I loved them all. I think the character development is done so well and Eva becomes such a strong woman and has such a strong voice. She’s definitely a character that will stay with me for a long time.
