It’s the feeling you get when you can tell something is profoundly wrong, but you can’t put your finger on what it is. Or, perhaps, you’re scared of what you might uncover if you look closer. The opening narration informs you that Isaac's mother spends her day watching religious television, and that God spoke to her and informed her that her son Isaac (that's you!) needs to be killed. And it only gets worse from there. As you get further through the game, levels start to get names like "Scarred Womb," and you battle with more and more enemies that resemble malformed versions of Isaac.

It also includes gratuitously brutal mechanics like recovering health by executing incapacitated victims in gruesome ways. If games really were turning people more violent, this was about to cause a massive rise in murderous psychos. Fortunately, newer versions of Windows only support the highest color options possible, so this is probably a worthwhile thing to look into only if you're using Windows 7, Vista, or XP. Despite its time’s graphic limitations, Silent Hill managed to deliver an intense psychological horror experience through smart sound design (I can still hear the radio static) and creative storytelling. While there were very few “good” FMV games released during the ‘90s, most of the titles in that bizarre genre are memorable for reasons other than their quality. Phantasmagoria is one such title.

Newer interfaces, like HDMI, often "push" in and "pull" out, meaning gravity can sometimes eventually work them loose from both the monitor side and the computer side. Older interfaces like VGA and DVI are often screw-secured, but they come loose sometimes, too.

While pretty much any of the Silent Hill games could have made this list (it’s kind of a messed-up franchise, in case you didn’t know), I think Silent Hill 4 is most deserving of this spot. It’s not the best Silent Hill (or even my favorite Silent Hill), but it is the most deeply disturbing entry in the franchise. On the way, he’ll bump into horrible creatures like ghostly aborted fetuses and giant severed hands that you must kill by… crying? Can you save Mario's girl from the clutches of Donkey Kong? Donkey Kong has kidnapped Mario's girlfriend Pauline and ... Despite riding a pretty sizeable wave of hype for such a small game, Agony turned out to be a pretty disappointing overall experience. However, I’ve yet to meet a person who has played this 2018 title and doesn’t consider it one of the most disturbing games ever made.This third-person psychological horror title casts you as a mental patient suffering from amnesia who’s roped into a murder spree by sociopathic mastermind Leo Kasper. It doesn’t take detailed graphics and realistic environments to create a disturbing experience that’ll take you out of your comfort zone. While it does start as your average high school romantic comedy where a guy joins the Literature Club to keep it from being closed down, things go south fast once the girls start showing their true (and disturbing) selves. The Suffering is perhaps best thought of as Crime and Punishment meets The Shining. While any game set in the most nightmarish prison imaginable is obviously not going to be a good time, The Suffering goes a step further by forcing you to deal with the possibility that you may be the worst monster in that suddenly supernatural structure. There are images in this game you’ll never be able to forget, but it’s the slightly more subtle elements of the story that really burrow into your brain. 11. Finally, I tried to avoid major spoilers when possible. However, I would warn anyone who may be bothered by generally disturbing material to please look into some of these games a little bit before diving into them. Many of these games feature some incredibly troubling themes and content. There’s no one thing that makes a horror game truly disturbing. Some are so gory that you begin to wonder if you can physically endure them for much longer. Others get under your skin in ways that may not be immediately apparent until you find yourself having nightmares about them. The one thing all disturbing horror games share is the way they make you want to escape them at any cost. Of course, the best such games keep you hooked long after you know you should go.The game is basically a mass-murder simulator where you rebel against mankind’s inherent evil by killing as many innocent NY citizens as you can.
