About this deal

Knowing that Max has stolen the Mother Stone and taken it to the Elf King to forge new Amulets, Vigo and Emily face growing dangers as they try to stop the Elf King. The Cielis Guard (what’s left of the Cielis army) prepares to fight the elf army, but the enemy is getting stronger and the Elf King has begun to use the shard of the Mother Stone to create his own Guardian Council. As both sides prepare for war, Trellis and Emily (with the help of Vigo and others) discover that the stone allows them to go into the past. Emily, while always wary of the voice in the stone, is finding new evidence to support her misgivings. She and Trellis go into the past and find that Max is not exactly what he seems to be and that he has been controlled by the Voice of his Amulet. Emily also discovers that the Voice of her Amulet is more sinister than she originally feared. Meanwhile, Trellis and Vigo look for Algos Island on a map, prompting Enzo to tell them that he is not surprised they could not find the island, since he had never heard of it before. He asks them what is on the island, demanding half of it. Trellis reveals they are going to look for his memories, so they can use them to their own advantage. Then, Emily, Vigo, and Trellis head onto the elf ship, which is about to explode. There’s only one escape pod, so Trellis, Emily, and Vigo make a shield around the elves, as the ship falls down. Then, they run into Riva and the town of Lucien, having just escaped.

Amulet Series by Kazu Kibuishi - Goodreads

The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling: A coming-of-age series with magic, adventure, good, and evil.

Did we miss something on diversity?

History/ Social Studies: In Book Six: Escape from Lucien we meet the Resistance Army. Discuss why it is called a “Resistance Army” and compare this army (its structure, goals, and missions) to resistance armies throughout history. How to learn to use your strengths and skills while accepting help from others when those strengths and skills are not enough; Besides, 30 years earlier before the series, other stonekeepers fought to keep them at bay and were eventually able to successfully defeat them. One stonekeeper— a mild and quiet young male elf from a small village— was kept in detainment in hopes of him returning to normal. However, the boy told them that they should have rather killed him and that they would regret their decision. One night, the stone returned to help the boy escape and he used his mystic stone powers to destroy the cell. The guards that were assigned to watch over him were killed including Leon Redbeard's father. The young elf eventually transformed into the Elf King, the evil beloved ruler/lord of Gulfen.

Amulet is a fantastic read for all ages. I just couldn't stop reading it and was so in love with it that I continued on through the current books. Of all the many forms of media, graphic novels stand out to me as being the most immersive. Be it an adaptation of a classic work of literature or the latest comic strip, I find myself lost in the colorful pictures and speech balloons. So it comes as no surprise that one of my favorite series happens to be of this genre. Amulet, a grotesquely underappreciated fantasy anthology by Kazu Kibuishi, is both beautifully illustrated and marvelously told. The story follows a young girl named Emily Hayes as she discovers a magical amulet in her grandfather’s house, which transports her, her mom and her brother Navin into a world filled with fantasy and danger. Emily Hayes (エミリー・ヘイズ Emily Hayes) is the main protagonist of Kazu Kibuishi's graphic novel series Amulet. In the series, she is a Stonekeeper, a leading member of the Resistance and Guardian Council, and, as of The Cloud Searchers, best friends and partners with Prince Trellis. She is the daughter of Karen and David Hayes, the great-granddaughter of Silas Charnon, the older sister of Navin Hayes, and the future mother of Moze. Set in a mysterious fantasy world, The Stonekeeper bears little resemblance to real life, but it does offer lessons about bravery, commitment, and family loyalty. Emily travels to Cielis, meets up with Trellis and Vigo. and then launches herself into space with the stone‘s power, with her destination being Typhon. The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien: A book in which a humble hobbit must join with forces with elves, dwarfs, and others to go on an adventure and save Middle Earth. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle: A book in which a brother and sister must travel to an alternate world to find and rescue their scientist father. Unfortunately, her resistance ebbed away by Book 7 when the Voice used her grief and rage over her father's death against her, causing her to lose control and transform into a colossal beast, a phoenix. History/Social Studies: In Book Five: Prince of the Elves (p. 58), Vigo tells Emily that, “Sometimes personal desires and ambitions can cloud the judgment of even our brightest minds.” Have students search for examples in history that support Vigo’s statement.

Amulet: The Stonekeeper: Book One by Kazu Kibuishi - review

Emily has a dream where she speaks with the voice of the stone. The voice says that due to magic working in the walls, it will not be able to speak with Emily while she is in Cielis, and it also warns her not to pass through a certain hallway there. The party arrives at Cielis, but they are split up. Emily, Navin, and Karen are brought to an apartment, Enzo, Rico, and Leon are left on the streets of the city, and as they are suspected to be workers of the Elf King. Meanwhile, Cogsley and Miskit are saved from a Wyvern's nest by a man named Vigo, and old stonekeeper who left the Council after they forced Silas out. Emily has suspicious feelings, and Leon is surprised as how quiet the streets are. Rico, Enzo, and Leon learn that many of the people in Cielis are "ghosts". Leon breaks Luger and Trellis out of prison, and defeats guards, who turn to stone upon death. The next day, Emily is woken up and taken to a Garden, where she meets other young stonekeepers. Emily discovers that she is competing for a place on the council, and she protests to Max, saying that she only wanted to speak with them. The council arrives, and tells the stonekeepers that they will enter the void and face challenges. The stonekeepers are transported to caves and she runs away from monsters called grouls. After escaping, Only Emily, Max, Pierce, and Ronan remain. They find a room with a children's playground game. The 4 beat the challenge, and they walk through a hallway, the same one that the voice warned her not to go through. They enter the room and find the mother stone, the material that amulets are made from. The other stonekeepers are revealed to be reanimated and turn to stone, except for Emily and Max. Max is revealed to be working with the Elf King, and retreats with the elves in possession of the stone.
