Another advantage of AS -186 is it's low noise output, so it can be used in the evening at home. Thanks to its low weight it can also be used as a portable hobby compressor. It took about 10 secs for the pressure to drop - this was with the air pressure regulator set to maximum which is much higher than would normally be used. With the airbrush switched off it took about 27 secs for the tank to recharge to full pressure. The old AS186 had the bent air line with vents on the ends of the "motor" casing. No idea if the one with plates is actually newer or just a different version.

In short your compressor's horsepower rating is a measurement of the power of the compressors motor. Most small airbrush compressors will usuallyrange from 1/6 to 1/4 horsepower. This information is usually found in your compressor's manual. Many airbrush compressors will nothave an airtank, however all compressors that do haveair tanks will be fitted with a drain valve. You will find this valve at the lowest part of the compressor's tank. Gravity will help the water that condenses inside the tank flow to the lowest part. Prior to removing the drain valve its not a bad idea to wear rubber gloves and place a large open tray under the tank to catch the discoloured water. Now with the compressor switched off and any remaining pressure in the tank completelyexpelled, unscrew the drain valve all the way. The water will now drain from the tank into the open tray. Again, it makes for good standard practice to drain the tank as often as possible, remember as soon as you use your compressor you have water in the tank. If you don't drain the tank the chances are it will start rusting the tank from the inside. Initial charge time for the air tank was 95 secs, reaching an indicated pressure of 4 bar (57 PSI) as per spec. I then held the airbrush valve open - the indicated pressure gradually dropped down to 3 bar (43 PSI) at which point the pump restarted. It seems to cope well with all four brushes, and has seems to have given a new lease of life to the old AE. This is your entry level Bami compressor, BB15v. All these compressors look completely different but all do the same job, so don’t worry.

Adapters range from A1 - A7, sizes are given in BSP (British Standard Pipe)- Example 1/8 BSP is not the diameter of the adapter.

Scottish Highlands: All postcodes containing AB and IV / KW1-KW14 / PA21- PA38 / PA80 / PH16-PH26 / PH30-PH41 / PH49-PH50 I can get one for around 100 Australian dollars. However when I have searched for the AS 186 two designs keep coming up. A collar on the drain tube on the bottom of the regulator can be lifted to release the air pressure from the tank and drain any condensate from the regulator water-trap.

At last I can now set the required air pressure accurately, the regulator on the old compressor was pretty temperamental, showing 1 bar when switched off and a max of just over 2 bar when running, so no idea as to what pressure I was actually using, but after 30 years use I guess it was due for retirement. No stop tap on air supply outlet - not really an issue unless you regularly need to swop airbrushes and easily rectified. So all this just goes to show that I think the AS186 will fill the requirements for most hobby painters, so you should buy in at that price point. But there are situations where you should consider something more expensive. Hopefully that’s enough info to get you started and thinking about your own specific needs, what you want to do with it, how you want to work, and whether noise is an issue in your work area. We’ll cover the setup you need once you’ve got your compressor nailed next time, starting with the actual airbrush itself.

The second type is direct, basically the motor compresses the air, and pushes it straight down the hose to your airbrush at your chosen pressure. That motor is running whenever you’re spraying, and the air pressure is controlled by a regulator. This is a device in the setup that makes sure the air pressure stays at the psi you set it at for the task at hand. Most compressors will fit to most airbrushes, but some airbrush makers feel the need to make a “special” insertion thing for their airbrushes (think Apple style). I have one of those re-branded cheapo compressors as well. IT works well enough, but I wouldn’t call it quiet by any means. Great if you spray in a different room (with ventilation and a respirator!), and I’ve had no issues with mine. It just works. In the states they cost about 100 USD shipped. Another advantage of AS -186A is it's low noise output, so it can be used in the evening at home. Thanks to its low weight it can also be used as a portable hobby compressor. Output from the regulator is a standard 1/8 BSP connector to fit most airbrush air-lines, which is an improvement of many compressors that have a 1/4 BSP fitting and hence require an additional adaptor to fit the airline. I tend to release the air pressure from the tank overnight or when I am not going to be using the airbrush for a longish period as I figure that it lowers the strain on joints and hence lessens the risk of leaks developing.
