Battlestar Galactica - The Complete Series [Blu-ray] [2004

Battlestar Galactica' is a tough release to judge visually. The series is often grainy and colors are heavily unsaturated in places, but this gritty washed-out look is the intended style of the filmmakers. On the first disc for each season, Ronald D. Moore gives a brief introduction touching on this subject plus there's a message on startup from Universal stating: On the extended version only is supplied by Moore and writer Michael Taylor. Everything I've said before applies once again. Deleted Scenes (SD, Disc 4, 19 minutes) – Deleted scenes from episodes 'Taking a Break from All Your Worries,' 'The Woman King,' 'A Day in the Life,' 'Dirty Hands, and 'Maelstrom.' Deleted Scenes (SD, 25 min.) – Deleted scenes for the episodes 'The Young Lords' (13 min.) and 'The Living Legend' (12 min.). Inside 'Battlestar Galactica': Working with the Daggit (SD, 5 min.) – Members of the cast and crew talk about the robot dog Muffit, who was actually performed by a three-year old chimpanzee named Evie. (Ported over from the 2003 DVD release.)As for the rest of Random Space Media’s Blu-ray set, the 10-part Face of the Enemy webisode series is also missing from the reboot series discs, just as they were on the US Blu-ray release (the only place you can currently find them is on the Japanese BD re-issue of Battlestar Galactica: Season Four— available here). Also, it should be noted that the original Battlestar Galactica Blu-rays are the 1.33:1 presentations as originally broadcast on ABC TV in the US (the reframed 1.78:1 presentations are not included and also not missed). Video: 1.33:1; Audio: English 5.1 DTS-HD MA, Castellian Spanish, Latin Spanish, French, and Italian 2.0 DTS; Subtitles: Japanese, English, Castilian Spanish, Danish, Latin Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese, Finnish, and Swedish REBOOT TV SERIES (PLUS RAZOR, THE PLAN, BLOOD & CHROME): As the title suggest, actually all three parts plus an additional thirty minutes of footage to really flesh out the finale - trust me you haven't seen the finale until you've seen this. Deleted Scenes (SD, Disc 5, 8 minutes) – Deleted scenes from episodes 'The Son Also Rises,' and 'Crossroads: Parts 1 & 2.'

Just for the sake of organization, I'm giving the miniseries its own little section here. However, all of this content is technically part of Season 1 on the first disc.

Battlestar Galactica: Other Seasons

Extended Episode: 'Daybreak' (HD, Disc 3) – The unrated extended version of the series finale that runs about half an hour longer. The series is heavy on dialogue, and Universal has done a great job making it clear and well-prioritized. Sometimes it can still sound a bit distant and constrained, but that's just a very minor quibble and it doesn't really detract from the experience. Deleted Scenes (SD, 46 min.) – Deleted scenes for the episodes 'Fire in Space' (9 min.), 'War of the Gods' (22 min.), and 'The Man with Nine Lives' (15 min.). The point is that 'Battlestar Galactica' was never meant to gleam and sparkle, so as long as viewers keep this in mind and don't approach the Blu-rays expecting the crystal clearness of a show like ' LOST' for example, then I'm sure the majority will be satisfied with the results.

Visual Effects (SD, 9 minutes) – Covers the various ships, jump effects, and usage of green screen technology bringing the intense world of 'Battlestar Galactica' to life. Deleted Scenes (SD, 35 min.) – Deleted scenes for the episodes 'Murder on the Rising Star' (9 min.), 'Greetings from Earth' (19 ½ min.), and 'Baltar's Escape' (6 ½ min.). Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance (SD, Disc 2, 27 minutes) – A collection of ten bonus 'Galactica' webisodes featuring an alternate storyline that takes place during the third season.Audio Commentary: 'Unfinished Business' (Disc 2) – Commentary with stars Grace Park and Tahmoh Penikett. While there's still plenty of 'cheese' to be found in the episodes on this release, I was amazed at how well some of them hold up, and how good some of the acting was – particularly on the original first season. Despite its age and flaws, I can't imagine any fan of the show who wouldn't want to have this set in their collection. Deleted Scenes (SD, 50 min.) – Also ported over from the 2003 release are a collection of deleted scenes, which also include outtakes and bloopers in the mix. The quality of the footage is pretty poor at times, but still fun to watch. Included on this first disc are deleted scenes for 'Saga of a Star World' (35 min.) and 'Lost Planet of the Gods' (15 min.).

Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection Blu-ray Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection Blu-ray

Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection (with Caprica) (Australian Import) (Blu-ray Review) The Oracle shows up again, but is this time joined by Battlestar Actual a bibliography of the technical terms used. Future/Past Technology (SD, 8 minutes) – A glimpse at the different kinds of technology seen in 'Battlestar Galactica' over the years. A widescreen remaster of Battlestar Galactica is something that some fans have wanted for a while now. Like their Star Trek brethren, people are absolutely positive that it can, and should be done, and that the purists are just holding out on them. But unlike Star Trek: TNG, with its plethora of light stands, crew members and other flotsam floating just out of frame, there are at least parts of Battlestar that were always intended to be widescreen. In the 1970s and 80s, it was fairly common for broadcast pilots, miniseries, and 2-part episodes to be repurposed for theatrical release overseas. Until very late in the game, the original plan for Galactica was for it to be a series of 4 TV movies, which later became the pilot, Lost Planet of the Gods, Gun on Ice Planet Zero, and War of the Gods. All of which were planned and shot (or at least protected for) 1.85:1. But this unfortunately is part of what makes this widescreen version such a mixed bag when compared to its 4:3 counterparts – the rest of the episodes weren’t planned for widescreen in this way.

Extras

For the first time ever, the Australian distributor Random Space Media has released Caprica: The Complete Series on ALL-REGION Blu-ray and at the correct frame rate! And you can now find it in their new 36-disc Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection import Blu-ray box set. Still, Universal’s new Blu-ray release can be looked upon as a victory – one of choice. The ability to finally watch this series in HD in dual versions meant to please both enthusiasts and newcomers is something for which the studio should be commended. The Music of Battlestar Galactica (SD, Disc 2, 23 minutes) – From what I can tell, this is sort of a spoof featurette with composer Bear McCreary. If you're interested in a serious behind-the-scenes look at the music for the series, you're better off with the ones in the next few discs. In their infinite wisdom, the folks over at Universal believe that no one but loyal fans and purists would ever want to see 'Battlestar Galactica' is its original full frame format (which, by the way, are available in the larger, more expensive Definitive Collection should you wish to splurge for that version), so as part of this remastering of the series, they've created a brand-new 1.78:1 widescreen version of each episode. Despite losing information at the top and bottom of each scene, the widescreen episodes are actually pretty well framed and I was surprised at how good most (but not all) of the series works in the new format.
