Based on Tim Burton’s 1988 wonderfully demented film, Beetlejuice The Musicalfollows Lydia Deetz – a strange and unusual teenager whose life takes an unexpected turn when she meets the former owners of her house – who just happen to be dead – and a degenerate demon from the Netherworld. When Lydia calls on Beetlejuice to scare away her insufferable parents, he comes up with the perfect plan that involves exorcism, arranged marriages and an adorable girl scout who gets scared out of her wits. Despite (or because of) this, he maintains a strong desire for his own personal freedom at any cost and agrees to help the Maitlands and later Lydia for this reason alone. His relationship with the latter is also somewhat better in the musical. Though Lydia understandably doesn’t trust him at first, they eventually bond over their “outsider” status and even become partners in scaring after he frightens her parents out of the house.
