Description

A house, not a person, is the star of Chase’s debut novel—an ivy-covered country estate in Cornwall. The old house definitely is a trove of memories and untold secrets and stories. You can smell the dust, see the family’s comings and goings, hear the water dripping from the leaky roof, and visualize the people who lived there. Equal parts romance, mystery, and historical fiction. For readers who are interested in complex period drama such as Daisy Goodwin’s The American Heiress, or who enjoy a touch of the gothic such as in Daphne du Maurier’s Rebeccaor Diane Setterfield’s The Thirteenth Tale.”– Library Journal(starred review)

A deliciously intriguing novel whose rich sense of time and place bear more than a few echoes of du Maurier's best."

The food was superbly cooked and it was a good portion without it being too... much. The service from the staff was also excellent and came with a friendly welcoming smile. The smiles lasted for the duration of our dinner. All in all an excellent dinner and service! Tapa Blanda. Condition: Bien. IMAGENES: En caso que no exista imagen de tapa. no dude en solicitarla. Anyone who believes in true love or is simply willing to accept it as the premise of a winding tale will find this debut an emotional, satisfying read.Forgotten the title or the author of a book? Our BookSleuth is specially designed for you. Visit BookSleuth Really, REALLY good, a complete surprise to me. This is the perfect, unputdownable summer book to get completely lost in. Why is no one reading this or talking about it? A little bit gothic drama, a little bit historical fiction, a little bit of romance, a good bit of suspense, with wonderful characters and a fabulous decrepit mansion with a personality of its own. Take this on vacation and thank me later! A twisting gothic of family secrets, forbidden lust, and an extraordinary family.”–Miranda Beverly-Whittemore,author of Bittersweet

It’s no secret that we think dogs are every bit a part of the family and every waggy tail that comes through our doors makes the day even brighter. Ron Rash is renowned for his writing about Appalachia, but his latest book, The Caretaker, begins ... The basic set up here is that you have the Altons: owners of a rambly pile in Cornwall, the traditionally English father fell in love with a warm-hearted American heiress, because don’t they always. Anyway, they had four kids (two twins, Amber and Toby, then Barney, then Kitty) who had a pretty much idyllic childhood with their stupidly-in-love parents and their country house to spend their summers in. But then Nancy dies in a horse-riding accent and everything unravels from there. There is one big twist in the story which you could see coming from a mile away, but I don't think it takes anything away from the reader. Eve Chase's deliciously intriguing descriptions will pull you in alongside her heroine Lorna in the red car that moves like a drop of blood down the drive to the house of secrets and dusty enchantments, as the outside world fades away.

Need Help?

Lots to love here, though. Gorgeous descriptions of Cornwall. Complicated characters—even the ones taking antagonistic roles, felt if not sympathetic at least consistently understandable. And, of course, lashings of sex, violence, melodrama and tragedy.
