Edward suggested that he could make it up to Lucius by allowing him to push him off the ship, which Lucius agreed to readily. These interactions with Lucius seemed to have played a significant role in helping Edward recognize and take a chance with his romantic feelings for Stede. Unfortunately, when Edward became the Kraken, one of his first cruel acts was to push the scribe overboard, likely not only out of revenge for Lucius encouraging him with Stede only for him to get his heart broken, but also because Lucius was one of the few people other than Stede that he had allowed himself to be vulnerable around.

When Frenchie showed Stede an invitation to a high-society party that he had found on the captured ship, Edward immediately expressed a desire to go. Edward, Stede, Oluwande, and Frenchie then traveled to the party ship, where Edward adopted the persona of "Jeff the Accountant". Later, when Izzy found out that Edward had no intentions of killing Stede, he took matters into his own hands by challenging Stede to a sword duel. To Edward's surprise, however, Stede managed to win the duel by using a technique the former had taught him, forcing an enraged and humiliated Izzy to leave the ship on a dinghy.
