I loved that the numbers were big and clear on each card, and each from was already filled in with little blueberries. We used these to practice counting, number recognition, and one to one correspondence. I actually laminated these cards to use over and over again – which has been really helpful! I would probably recommend this book only with a caveat: I don't think it's suitable for kids who live in areas where there are actual bears; it could easily give them the wrong idea. A vigorous late season variety, Calypso is a cold-hardy and easy to grow variety producing high yields of medium-large sized berries of excellent quality. The large fruit is sweet, round and light blue in colour.

I hope Sal and her family make the most of that blueberry jam because I doubt that mother will be returning next year to collect more berries. Then again, she didn’t seem all that bothered.

The Wallet

Sal’s first (minor) opponent is her mother. Sal wants to play with and eat the berries in the pail whereas the mother wants to make the most of her time on the hill and collect sufficient berries for jam. I’m sure that mother has plenty of other jobs to do today in the house. My boys are 5 and 2, so they are on very different math levels. I was able to print out separate math activities for them that they both enjoyed. Use nets to protect plants from birds in the fruiting season. In spring, apply a little Bone Meal around each plant. Once this is done, apply a mulch such as chipped up pine tree or pine needles. These are ideal mulches to place around the plants because they’re fairly acidic. Ensure that all weeds are removed & that the soil is moist before mulching. Matthew and Joshua, the older sons, were quite familiar with the story of little Sal. But to Nathan, four, and Adam, two, the book was brand new. During one of our weekly trips to the local library, I happened to see the book on a table in the children’s section. “Nathan. Adam,” I whispered loudly as they sat on the floor rummaging through a pile of picture books. “Here’s a book your older brothers used to love when they were little.” I held up the book with Sal on the cover.
