With a bit more than 22 percent of our 2020 Callaway Chrome Soft sample set flagged as “bad” for one reason or another, there is room for improvement. With higher compression baked into the design, there’s significantly less of a chance that the ball will over-compress at tour speeds. Don’t take that as a suggestion that Callaway has gone full Pinnacle here. As with Chrome Soft, it’s about tweaking materials and the relationship between the core and CSX’s two mantle layers to create a ball that, compression point for compression point, is faster than competitor offerings, but still feels soft- ish.

Please Note: You may experience longer wait times on Mondays and Tuesdays. We appreciate your patience. This will likely be news to some of you, and some of you won’t believe it, but whichever side of the Chrome Soft core you happen to be on, here’s your takeaway: Callaway is committed to remaking Chrome Soft into the great golf ball that many already think it is.

2020 Callaway Chrome Soft – Inspection

Once again, it is Precision Technology and a new Hyper Elastic SoftFast Core that combine for great speed and lower spin in this model. A new cover material, meanwhile, is why you can expect greater control around the greens. You don’t need to compare a ball to anything when you’re stating the factual findings. At no point did MGS say “this ball is 20% better than other balls”. MGS did say X% of balls had this defect. Again awesome report. I have been reading it over and another question popped up. In the comments you mentioned that ball can bad for multiple reasons (poor cover and off center for example).

While cover 2020 Chrome Soft covers are generally clean and free of tool marks, we did disqualify a single ball for a deep, fingernail-like impression that spanned multiple dimples. General ObservationsSpecs: Construction – Three-piece; Cover – Urethane; Core – SoftFast; Dimples / Pattern – 332 in HEX (hexagonal) design

A healthy percentage of golfers love the Callaway Chrome Soft. You don’t lay claim to +/-20% of the market with a product consumers hate. I hadn’t seen the comment on the sample size – I think my comment was posted before Tony made clarified that point. Frankly I am a little surprised that the manufacturers would agree to that small of a sample, but if they are on board so be it. This new design also boasts a new Tour Aero dimple design to provide powerful ball flight and lower drag for greater overall distance. For Callaway, however, the number of staffers playing the retail ball has invariably been closer to 0 than 100%. Phil, Xander, Sergio. Nope, nope, nope. It’s amazing isn’t it? People won’t take the time actually read an article and get all the facts, they look at a couple charts or pictures and make incorrect or at best incomplete statements based on that. This is going to sound a bit odd coming from a guy who is obsessed with golf balls, but I think the performance aspect of the golf ball is greatly overvalued relative to the quality aspect. In addition to his editorial responsibilities, he was instrumental in developing MyGolfSpy's data-driven testing methodologies and continues to sift through our data to find the insights that can help improve your game. Soft feel + performance. That was the goal. Even if they weren’t aware of the theory driving Chrome Soft design, golfers bought into it to the tune of 20%, positioning Callaway as clear #2 with plenty of distance between it and #3. From a fitting perspective, 100 MPH is almost certainly close to the upper limit of Chrome Soft’s viability. Much faster, over-compressing the ball and losing distance because of it, is a legitimate concern. The majority of faster swingers will likely be better off with Chrome Soft X.

Regarding point 1. Yes, the equipment used was different. The native scale is a bit different and the conversions, from what we can tell anyway, aren’t perfect. We find that our machine is generally close to manufacturer’s stated numbers.Very well done.. I would love to see this test on an “above average” ball and compare the numbers.. The outcome of this new Precision Technology is consistently fast ball speed, tight dispersion and consistent performance from every single ball.
