When you tot up the differences between these outwardly similar cameras, it's clear that they're aimed at very different photographers. This is the correct answer (based on my RP and I'm sure the R5 is the same). The charging source, whether it's an AC adapter or power bank, needs to say that it supports the "Power Delivery" specification. Just having a USB-C connection isn't sufficient.

Of more interest to the rest of us is the EOS R5's new battery – the LP-E6NH has about 14 per cent more capacity than the slightly older LC-E6N. Those who already own Canon kit should note that the older model of battery is still compatible with the R5. You can also use a Power Delivery supply to charge the R5 via its USB-C port, saving you popping the battery out when it’s time to recharge. I suspect it's possible that IF your camera had its wireless mode enabled, AND was in proximity to your phone which had also had the Canon Camera Connect App running you could have had a communications link running that drew down the battery. As others have already noted, this will vary greatly depending on usage. FWIW, my real-world sessions have mostly been with the 100-400 Mk II +1.4x III and I typically get 400-700 shots. I have had a few days were I got more, don't think I've ever had less. The Canon EOS R5, on the other hand, is clearly aimed at professionals who demand a lot from their gear, including highly detailed stills and equally detailed video footage. Its 45MP sensor and 8K raw video footage blurs the lines between photographer, videographer and filmmaker, especially when C-Log is used. You can attach the protective cover in a different orientation to indicate whether the battery is charged or not. The second item on most screens is the ‘Shutter count’. This shows how many times the shutter has been fired for still images (movies are not counted) on this particular battery on this charge. When the battery is recharged the number is reset, so it cannot show you the total number of shots that the battery handled. The ‘Shutter count’ is useful as it shows you how many shots you are getting from a single charge of the battery. If this number starts dropping it is a sure sign that the battery condition is starting to deteriorate. Having dual SD and CFexpress card slots means you can use what you have already and upgrade your cards when you have the chance in the future.

We re-tested the Canon EOS R5's video performance after the arrival of its 1.1.0 firmware update, which promised to "extend video shooting times in some situations". You can read the full results of our video tests here, but the short answer is that while it slightly improves recovery times in some modes and situations, it's not a radical change from the original figures quoted for the EOS R5.Video performance is excellent as well. We tested the EOS R5 on a small half-day documentary shoot (see above),capturing just over 240GB of 4K video for a total of a shade over 55 minutes overall.

It's also worth noting that a recent firmware update, version 1.3.0, has brought the very useful Canon Log 3 (C-Log 3) format, which lets you achieve wide dynamic range and means its slots nicely into workflows that also include footage shot on Canon's EOS Cinema cameras. The update also brings a slo-mo 120p option for Full HD recording, though sadly the 30-minute recording limit for video files remains.

Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip Key Features:

Charging a depleted battery takes approx. 3 hr. at room temperature (23°C/73°F). The time required to charge the battery will vary greatly depending on the ambient temperature and the battery's remaining capacity. Batteries can also deteriorate if left flat or stored for a long time without use. This means that even if you have not used the camera much the battery condition may still have suffered. This is because the R5 needs faster read/write speeds, as it shoots stills at 45MP compared to the R6’s 20MP, and can capture 8K Raw video footage, with 4K oversampled 120fps video footage. Capturing that kind of video data simply isn't possible on today's SD UHS-II cards. Canon EOS R5 vs EOS R6: Battery life Many batteries in current use could be quite old. The LP-E6 battery first appeared on the EOS 5D Mark II, which came out in September 2008. If you have this model, or a model out at around the same time, the batteries you are using could easily be more than a decade old and in that time they might have been recharged hundreds of times. With DSLRs I could simply hold the camera up to my eyes without having to turn it on to figure out if I liked the way a scene looked through the lens. Now I need the camera to be turned on to do the same thing. Of course, I could simply leave the camera on, but the decreased battery life of mirrorless cameras makes that a suboptimal choice, especially when on longer trips.
