About this deal

In the book How to Get Rich, Felix Dennis shared his personal tale of how he became one of the wealthiest men in England. Near the end of the book, he shares: Actor Jim Carrey once said, “I wish everyone could get rich and famous and everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that’s not the answer.” Mike Posner Sure, if you really want to, you can book that meditation retreat. You can go to a sweat lodge, sell all your belongings, move to Indonesia, or whatever other outer risk you could think of. Chop Wood, Carry Water is the title of a famous book by Joshua Medcalf where an “Akira-sensei” teaches him life lessons that are about becoming a better version of himself. In a way, this is a contemporary literary adaptation of the famous “wax on and wax off” scenes from the original Karate Kid movies. Anxiety over things you care about: “When you care about something, you’ll still get anxious. If you spend 2 years working on your book b aby, once you release it into the world and open it up to criticism, it’ll still feel terrifying. I didn’t do it for the money, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care whether it makes an impact.”

My income, at this point, is almost completely automated, only spending 2 hours or less a week on work related to how I make money.” If you’re like me, you’re someone who is still in the awakening process and is learning to master these concepts. (Or perhaps, nowhere near mastery and just starting to nibble at the edges of them!) This phrase is a gem that help you infuse great wisdom into your life! You’ve probably heard it before. The little voice inside your head that says you aren’t good enough. That you can’t do it. The ultimate illusion of the human experience is control6. The person you want beside you in battle is the guy who has surrendered the outcome, and surrendered to the fact that he might die. When you surrender the outcome, you are freed up to be at your best, to be in the moment, and to trust your training. It is the one who has surrendered the outcome who ironically has the greatest chance of survival.” according to who they are, not what they do. • My value comes from who I am, not what I do. • Pursue excellence no matter what. • Sometimes you have to say F your feelings and choose to be excellent.”

For years, I assumed the old woman must have had the ultimate experience at the top of that mountain. She’d achieved enlightenment, divine union, satori—whatever you want to call it—and was completely liberated from pain and suffering. From that point forward, life was total bliss, so why not chop wood and carry water? Jesus took the time to wash the feet of his disciples. Many would have considered this to be beneath him, but he knew better. He knew that, even as someone who had achieved enlightenment, it was his duty and his pleasure to serve others, to do the tasks that seem below his “pay grade” and to do them with great love. Achieving financial independence provides a brief spike in happiness, but eventually you return to your baseline level of happiness and you still have to find ways to fill your days with meaningful activities. I once tweeted out that if you have the freedom to spend time doing these two things each day, you have everything you need in life: Nothing is done because the doer has wholeheartedly vanished into the deed; the fuel has been completely transformed into flame. This ‘nothing’ is, in fact, everything. It Exasperated, the young man asked how this was possible. “I have learned that the tighter you hold on, the less you hold.” And this is life’s lesson too. The more we struggle and panic while we try to do something, the less we accomplish. One of my teachers, the great Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, has spoken of the importance of doing menial tasks with mindfulness. He uses all manner of examples for this, but my favorite is teeth brushing:All program materials will be available on BODi under the CHOP WOOD CARRY WATER “Program Materials” section. After my first experience of pure perception driving up Folsom Avenue, I became guilty of the cardinal sin of mindfulness training. I coveted more of the same experience. Instead of being mindfully present to whatever was going on, without judgment, I turned meditation practice into a quest for the ultimate experience. In truth, I still struggle with this. A Zen koan comes to mind. Before Enlightenment, Chop Wood Carry Water The only thing that is truly significant about today, or any other day, is who you become in the process. Each of us are building our own house. Sometimes you might think you are building for your school, your family, your company, or your team, but you are always building your own house… I hope you build wisely.”

Having a mission is different. It’s something for life. It will help you overcome your daily battles and navigate you along the way. Primal Movement Flow: There are hybrids, to include primal movements, so by the end of the collection you have learned what you need for this complete primal movement flow. And again, these tasks can feel menial sometimes, especially when we are busy, overwhelmed, stressed out, or burnt out. But there’s another saying: Some of the tips inside aren’t groundbreaking, yes. But they will definitely help you in the process of becoming great. In times when things are hard, when you struggle, and when you want to quit. When you can be truly in the experience of brushing your teeth (or chopping wood or carrying water), mindful of what you are doing and grateful for the the blessings you have, this is where true enlightenment lies. 3. Contribute to society / serve others Instead, we must realize that contentment can only be found in being fully present with ordinary daily activities – with chopping wood and carrying water. When you’re able to find fulfillment in these ordinary activities, you can finally be at peace in life. Over the weekend, I watched a YouTube tarot reader, who talked about how there are often people… Read More »

Jess talks about the overlap between politics and spirituality, China’s move away from coal, EPA’s move towards cleaner refrigerants, vaccine equity, good moves by Democratic state legislatures, bad moves by corporate Congressional Democrats, drug prices, and oh wow, Virginia!! Beware! Comparing yourself to other people is a dangerous game. Especially today, where you can literally see what everyone else in the world is doing. While few of us in the Western world need to chop wood for our fires or carry water to wash ourselves and drink, there are still so many daily tasks that feel tedious, annoying, menial. Washing dishes, brushing your teeth, commuting to work… just to name a few. Even though you are equipped with life changing wisdom that could transform lives, you must not share it without an invitation. Most people just want to be heard and loved, they don't want your wisdom, and that is OK. Sometimes, you can actually become the greatest impediment to other people growing when you try and force things on them. In time, if they see you model it, they will probably start to ask.” All rights reserved. No part of this book may be reproduced, stored, or transmitted by any means—whether What is enlightenment really? Is it some kind of ultimate experience? In this post, I consider a different solution while imagining a story behind a Zen koan. What does an old woman’s journey up a mountain reveal?
