Davey’s capacity to perceive the world in a multi-sensory way is one of the talents he passes to Sam. For example, favourite food becomes “…daydreams in your mouth…Or wishes down your throat…” Discuss everyday items and experiences, or use photos of familiar places, and help children develop their use of metaphor by exploring senses and linking one positive idea with another: a delicious taste is wonderful, as are star beams, so favourite food could become “star beams on your tongue”. Children will explore and discuss how different styles of poetry have been used to show the reader how Davey was bullied. In their independent activities, children are tasked to infer Davey's feelings throughout these events, in the form of thought bubbles or diary entries. In the FSD? activity, children are challenged to create a shape poem to represent the thoughts and feelings inside Davey's head. They can't see themselves in the mirror, so they don't know how beautiful they are. But no one can see them but you and me. I wonder how it feels to be so full of light, so full of joy, and yet so small when compared to the sky.

The poetry style of the book takes you by surprise at the beginning and offers a different structure to the story and really breaks the chapters down into different almost unique stories of their own. I think this alternative style of story structure just makes the book even more special. My favourite part of the book is when we get to really experience the way that Davey sees the world through the intense descriptions he offers to Sam, this progresses throughout the book and allows us to experience this alternate perception of reality along with them.I really liked the way that it was written from Sam's point of view because it showed how much of a decision he had to make with his friends. Alex or Davey? Alex or Davey? Narrated in verse, Cloud Busting, which was shortlisted for the 2004 Nestlé Smarties Book Prize (age 6-8 category), is an exploration of an unlikely friendship between two very different boys. Sam is the Class Bully and he makes Davey, who is imaginative, instinctive - a born poet, in fact - the Class Idiot. But gradually a close relationship develops between them as Davey opens Sam's eyes to a whole new world: one that is alive with words, rhythm, music and colour, and the boys become Best Friends - but only in secret. I loved this book because it is a poem book. this fiction book is good and my favourite character is Alice because she's pretty and nice. I would recommend this book to my friends. Cloud Busting offers an embarrassment of riches when it comes to writing responses; below is a sprinkling of possibilities:

Despite his Mum's insistence, Sam doesn't want to be friends with Davey. He thinks Davey's a first class, grade A, total moron. But when the two boys are thrown together a bond is formed between them. Sam is still embarrassed to be seen with Davey, but little by little he has to admit, when it's just the two of them, Davey is a lot of fun. But then something terrible happens . . . This story shows how important it is for people to have friends who care about them even if those friends have different beliefs than yours do—and what happens when those friendships don't work out because of something else. Throughout these six lessons, your class will become familiar with the main characters in the story. They will infer Sam and Davey's thoughts and feelings, and express this through poetry, diary entries, drama and discussion. Children will make predictions based on their knowledge and understanding of the story, and explore how different characters react to the same event. They will analyse both how and why Sam and Davey change throughout the book, and link this to the themes of bullying, friendship and conformity.
