About this deal

The data does move around a bit. For example, War Thunder is now showing the best results for DDR5, along with Doom Eternal. But overall we're looking at very similar performance trends. In contrast, the 7-Zip Beta compression/decompression benchmark shows tremendous gains in file-compression performance with the DDR5 kit. (See the 7-Zip results on their own tab.) So, in addition to the built-in 7-Zip benchmark, we added an actual 7.6GB file-compression time (a second 7-Zip result) to our timed benchmarks. More performance: DDR5 run speeds start at 4800MT/s while DDR4 offers a maximum speed of 3200MT/s. As a result of this increase, we see two times the performance in HPC (high-performance compute) workloads. In the case of deep learning, Micron DDR5 memory delivers up to five times the performance of DDR4.

But wait... Raptor Lake will support DDR4 memory, and while it's possible DDR5 will be of more benefit in a year, it's still not going to be massive and gamers will almost always end up GPU limited in games, rather than CPU limited. The big issue with this future-proof argument is the same as before, they hinge on the investment paying off in the long run with very few short-term advantages. The UL Procyon benchmark, which runs a consistent, repeatable workload on a licensed install of Adobe Premiere Pro, shows that more bandwidth can help matters, with DDR5-4800 taking the win there. The results of this test still indicate some gains for reduced latency when moving from CAS 22 to CAS 14 at DDR4-3200, however.

Testing DDR5 vs. DDR4: Down and Dirty With the Performance Differences

So why do this at all? It’s mostly being done because you can’t really quadruple the density of the chip without additional safety layers. Today, you’ll mostly only find ECC used in servers and workstations, because it’s done for mission critical reasons. The on-die ECC in DDR5 is just something had to be done to make the high speed and high density a possibility.

Micron DDR5 server DRAM nearly doubles the performance of DDR4. Unlike DDR4, DDR5 is optimized to increase server and workstation performance by 85% or more. First introduced in 2014, DDR4 can no longer keep up with the demands of the data center. With more instances of actively running virtual machines on a single platform, DDR5 technology relieves the bandwidth-per-core memory crunch and increases the performance and responsiveness of virtualized applications.

Intel’s 12th-gen Alder Lake S chips actually support both DDR4 and DDR5 (along with low-power versions). Intel launched Alder Lake with DDR5 motherboards, but knowing that new technology brings higher prices and low availability, motherboards that also support 12th-gen Alder Lake and current DDR4 memory will be common for at least the first year or two. Is DDR5 more future proof? It also depends on how you see your investment in RAM too. Paying a premium for DDR5 in 2021 or early 2022 means you can use that RAM when building a new system in 2026 (where you’d have to toss the DDR4). But typically it’s better just to upgrade to a new memory standard a few years after it drops, when the RAM will be larger, faster and cheaper. Will next-gen CPUs be faster with DDR4 or DDR5?

Part-specific certification of how this product meets the requirements of the current DIRECTIVE 2011/65/EU and 2015/863/EU, a.k.a. Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive (Recast). Improved reliability: ODECC (on-die error correction code) detects all single- and double-bit error codes and resolves single-bit error codes before sending them to the host CPU/GPU. ODECC is an evolution included in the DDR5 specification that is designed to improve customer quality and enable future scaling. Fortnite also saw some benefit to using DDR5 memory, though for the most part the margins were less impressive. We did see a 12% boost to the 1% lows at 1080p, with a 6% improvement for the average frame rate and this was reduced to 5% at 1440p and then nothing at 4K.StarCraft II is another CPU intensive game, but for all the wrong reasons. This old title only utilizes a single core heavily, but we see there is some benefit to feeding that core more bandwidth as performance was boosted by 7%, almost across the board. The Riftbreaker is a base-building, survival game with Action-RPG elements, and what makes it particularly useful for our testing is that it heavily utilizes the CPU. Riftbreaker utilizes core-heavy processors well and with thousands of units in-game it's a very heavy workload. Yes, as data centers move to support the more complex algorithms used for AI training, DDR5 is superior to DDR4 in the following ways: Credit is provided by Novuna Personal Finance, a trading style of Mitsubishi HC Capital (UK) PLC, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Financial Services Register no. 704348. The register can be accessed through http://www.fca.org.uk In a statement to TechRadar Pro, a spokesperson for Teamgroup comfirmed that the price will be higher than DDR4 (no surprise there) with SODIMM DDR5 modules on the platform schedule.
