About this deal

Dave spends a lot of time searching for Dogger during this story. You and your child should take it in turns to set up a treasure hunt where you hide an item and have to give instructions / clues to help each other find what has been hidden. Radio Times columnist Jane Garvey put: 'So sorry to hear this - wonderful woman who brought joy and comfort to so many of us.' I was so happy to see this book on your 100 best books list. It was my favourite story as a child and I recently bought a new copy for my own children to enjoy. A tale of loss and also unexpected but pure sisterly love. A fantastic book, I loved this story as a young child myself, i decided to buy it for my 3 year old daughter and she loves it! The illustrations are lovely, a perfect choice for any young child.

In a brand new collection of stories and poems, Alfie has a spooky late-night adventure with an owl and introduces us to his secret den in the garden. Dogger the book is so amazing. i loved it when i was a child and i still love it now. even now i nearly cry when am reading it.... Pullman wins 'Carnegie of Carnegies'". Retrieved 2012-12-03.Author Michael Rosen said she 'delighted and moved us for years and years and years and will go on doing so' Shirley Hughes manages to capture the simplicity and sincerity of a child’s love for his favourite toy through her narrative and illustrations; a love that many people can relate to. The conflict-resolution plot gives the perfect sense of catharsis for the child reader and turns this book into a must-read. Forget puppy dog eyes! Cats have nearly 300 facial expressions, including a 'play face' they share with humans, study finds

We love Shirley Hughes books and this is a particular favourite of my my 4yr old daughters. A child's favourite toy going missing is something that all children can relate to. Just gorgeous BBC and Sky scramble to make on-air apologies for broadcasting Dominic Cummings' expletive-filled Covid inquiry appearance uncensored (but furious viewers blast them for saying sorry while ex-No10 aide gave evidence) Best of all has been perennially encountering very young children who are learning to look with such rapt pleasure and follow a story visually long before they are able to read.'

Looking for something different

Irish writer Jane Casey posted: 'The magical thing about Shirley Hughes was that she understood the specific solemnity of childhood and how large small adventures (like a leaking roof) can loom. Due to the clear sequence of events throughout this story it makes it the perfect story to work on your child’s narrative/story telling skills. Themes running throughout the Dogger story include loss, gratitude, friendship, family and kindness. Shirley's incredible stories and illustrations, from Dogger to Alfie and Lucy and Tom, have touched so many generations and are still so loved. Thank you, Shirley.'

I loved the description of Dave’s attachment to Dogger as I think this is something that every child can relate to and I myself laughed out loud when Dogger had to be washed and hung out to dry. Author and illustrator Shirley Hughes OBE was the first ever Book Trust Lifetime Achievement Award winner. She wrote and illustrated over 200 cherished children’s books, including the celebrated Alfie stories. Lucy Mangan in Bookworm: A Memoir of Childhood Reading says that now that she's a mom, she cries every time she reads this. I can see why. And the pictures are absolutely fantastic, so lively and expressive and lovely.

Want to save more time

Hughes, best known for Alfie series and children's picture book Dogger, died 'peacefully at home' last month I found this book in the book corner in the year 2 class I am currently placed in. Instantly I was drawn to this book as it is one that I remember reading as a child. I read this book with a child this afternoon. I asked the child questions about the book and they were able to give the answers based on what they had heard. During the search for Dogger the illustrations are smaller and laid out in a way that seems to emphasize the panic and eagerness to find poor old lost Dogger as mum tears the house apart looking for him. I love the illustration where Dad is out in the garden with a torch and Bella and mum stand by the door while dave looks forlornly out of his bedroom window. Tributes flooded in for writer, with fans remembering the 'stories of our childhood' that 'will continue forever' Born in West Kirby, Merseyside, she was the daughter of TJ Hughes – who founded what would become a successful chain of department stores that first originated in Liverpool. She studied drawing and costume design at the Liverpool School of Art and also studied fine art at Oxford's Ruskin School of Art.

Her early work included illustrations for Dorothy Edwards' My Naughty Little Sister, with the first picture book she created being Lucy And Tom's Day in 1960. In 2017, asked about her inspiration for Dogger, she said: 'The inspiration behind it was another lost toy. We did look everywhere, but we never found it. (The actual) Dogger was a present to our son when he was two years old. Whatever other calamity has befallen him, this is fundamental, and important when writing marketable picture books for the youngest children. The kindness of Bella is introduced here when she spends time looking through her toy box, then lends Dave one of her own stuffed toys. My 3 year old daughter loves this book, she's chosen it from the library 4 times!!! I like the illustrations, the story, and the gentle introduction to generosity. Author Mr Rosen tweeted: 'Shirley Hughes has gone. Long live wonderful, lovely Shirley. You've delighted and moved us for years and years and years and will go on doing so.' Thankfully this heartwarming tale has a happy ending, the bond between a child and their favourite comfort toy should never be underestimated. Police chief admits 'we got it wrong' but claims there was 'no malicious intent' after officer was seen tearing down posters of Israeli hostages in Manchester In 2017, asked about her inspiration for Dogger, she said: 'The inspiration behind it was another lost toy. We did look everywhere, but we never found it. (The actual) Dogger was a present to our son when he was two years old.
