The skull is almost complete and provides important evidence for understanding the evolution of humans and the origin of our species. Researchers first studied the cranium, identifying more than 600 traits they fed into a computer model that ran millions of simulations to determine the evolutionary history and relationships between different species. Geochemist and team member Dr Junyi Ge from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) says, 'Although it is impossible to pin the cranium to an exact location with currently available technology, all the evidence suggests that it was from a bed of water-laid sediments aged between 138,000 and 309,000 years ago in the Harbin region.' An international team led by Prof Qiang Ji at the Hebei Geo University in China drew on geochemical techniques to narrow down when the skull came to rest in Harbin, dating the bones to at least 146,000 years old. The skull has a unique combination of primitive and more modern features, with the face, in particular, more closely resembling Homo sapiens. One huge molar remains.
