It may not come as a huge surprise, but if you need to choose between the Synology DS1520+ and the Synology DS920+, definitely buy the Synology DS1520+ NAS, if you can afford that higher price tag. The Synology DS920+ is definitely a good solution and is still one of the best Diskstation as they have produced for many years, but there is just no avoiding the simple fact that the Synology DS1520+, even in its default release, provides more in every single way than the DS920+ does and if you think you are going to upgrade one or more parts of the Synology NAS system in its lifetime whilst you use it for home or business, it makes more sense to invest on day one and buy the Synology DS1520+ NAS. I upgraded both my DS 218J and my brand new DS920+ to DSM 7.0 and liking it a lot! No real problems. Moments with my Photos lost its tags during the transition to Synology Photos. I have to redo them but that’s ok. Everything else is great. I agree with this review.

What’s a good brand alternative with better hardware? Qnap? I primarily need a good video streamer for a large video collection to my home theater.

At the end what I keep in mind is no embedded gpu support for the new one and for a home user like me it matters.

Hi, what do you use to steam uncompressed 4K? The media boxes (Apple TV, mi box) just can’t handle things once in the really big 4K, for now only my laptop can play them properly Of course, you will have to either require a managed network switch or have a system that can leverage the advantages of link aggregation/port trunking in the first place, but still, nevertheless, the DS1520+ provides you with a better overall available bandwidth early doors and even if all other elements of these devices were equal, you cannot beat more network interfaces on a NAS. Once again, you pay a premium, but you are getting something for your money. As well as the performance benefits internally mentioned previously would also result in better external performance in the DS1520+ (that’s to a larger RAID array and more memory) over those LAG’d gigabit ports. Though, it is still a shame that we are still talking about 1Gbe on NAS systems from Synology in their 2020+ series. Suppose you're using the NAS for the first time; you need to create a volume to store all your files and precious data. First, I will create one storage pool using Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR), then a volume, and finally, a shared folder. i have a test DS119j and upgraded it to DSM 7 and it’s very slow. Tested 4gb of photo’s and the database is going on for days. The hardware on offer with the DS1520+ makes it an outstanding choice as a Plex media server. It can transcode several 4K files at once, and eSATA extensibility means you won't have to worry about running out of storage. I’ve installed it as a VM on my DS1821+ and I’m completely disappointed with the new photos app. Maybe I’m old fashioned idk but the way timeline view is implemented it doesn’t allow you to look at a timeline on an album level anymore like you could do in photostation. You have to choose between album view or timeline view. I like to look at my photos different ways and this makes the app kind of unusable for me. Additionally I would like them to shows tags on the timeline view when you’re inside an album that has multiple albums underneath it but no photos in it directly. I’ve reached out to them but very little hope of it getting done in my opinion. I’m not upgrading until photos is useable as photostation is no longer supported on dsm7. Additionally I had a lot of indexing / conversion issues on my VM with my photos directory. Not sure if that’s just a VM issue or not So owned we know which side of Robbies bread is buttered by the people whose products he hawks even if they are inadequate by todays standards and consumer needs….Its always the same, no objectivity what so ever…..why people bother to listen to this toothless moron is beyond me…..NAS Compares should be called Synology/QNAP No Comparison Here One can only conclude that while developing the DS1520+, the bean-counters at Synology decided that while some improvements were needed, but these needed to be countered by taking some very useful functionality away, disappointingly.

A faster method, the one I will use for this guide, is to enter your NAS's name directly in the windows file explorer. My NAS's name is NAS_mulcas; then I should use the following format: \\NAS_mulcas. The same name as the one point in the image above. There are a few things about the DS1520+ that we don’t care for, and they’re mostly to do with bandwidth and throughput restrictions as we’ve mentioned already. The first thing you need to do to get the NAS sorted out is to install the hard drives. For both Consumer and SMB Synology NAS, the HDD installation is almost the same. Did you do a manual update or did DSM 7.0 show as an update automatically? It has not shown up on my RS1221+ or DS216+II in Canada yet… Now in terms of the external connectivity and how it can be upgraded, this is another big area of difference between the DS920+ and DS1522+ NAS. Both systems arrive with 1GbE RJ45 LAN ports, which can be combined via link aggregation/Port Trunking to allow up a larger degree of network connectivity. But the DS920+ arrives with 2x 1GbE and the DS1522+ arrives with 4x 1GbE. This is only really a big deal if you are looking at smart switch supported environments or have larger shared bandwidth concerns though. However, the big difference in bandwidth potential between these two NAS centres around the DS1522+ features the option to upgrade it’s network connectivity to 10GbE by installing an E10G22-T1-mini 10G network upgrade in the available proprietary slot. Now, this is not a connection that is available in the default DS1522+ and is an optional upgrade, but still, it is good to know that the option of adding 1,000MB/s bandwidth is available down the road. The DS920+ does not include an option to increase the network connectivity in this way (though unofficial and not officially supported USB-to2.5GbE and 5GbE connectivity via 3rd party adapters are possible (but I wouldn’t trust their long term stability really) and for many, this will be a deal-breaker between these systems in the same way the CPU differences between these two NAS’ does. Both systems see a very similarly sized chassis and the 10GbE upgradable slot on the DS1522+ using a smaller M.2 sized connector rather than the PCIe 3×8 slot of other Synology NAS, so it does not impact the size of the chassis either.
