Once the final whistle is blown, that's what FIFA 15 does best: it makes you feel like a star. Goalkeepers may appear more skilful, but spectacular goals are frequent enough to make you believe that you're incredible at defeating them. Tactical options have just the right amount of depth to allow you to change the course of a game and call yourself a genius for doing so, but not so much that you're at risk of confusing yourself. Ultimate Team still requires you to grind (or pay real cash) to put together a top team, but loaning in great players lets you perform magic instantly.

Less obviously, FIFA seems to have moved away from the focus on ball control and the defensive game of FIFA 13 and FIFA 14, and towards a more dynamic, aggressive and – frankly – exciting style of play. Ready for FIFA 15? Experience the Barclays Premier League, Next Gen Goalkeepers, and so much morewhen the game hits store shelves and digitally on September 23. If there’s a sense of ‘if it ain’t broke’ about the structure and game modes, then it’s more than made up for by the presentation. On one level, FIFA 15 pushes the Sky Sports-inspired look and feel about as far as it can go, with superb cutaways and replays, titles, close-ups and the rest that leave it closely resembling real TV coverage. The commentary from Martin Tyler and Adam Smith is astonishingly good, particularly in the premiership, though you wonder how well the references to Manchester United’s troubles or world cup performances will date over the coming months. FIFA 15 brings football to life in stunning visual detail so fans can experience the emotion and intensity of football like never before. Fans and media that have had a chance to play early versions of FIFA 15 have expressed their enjoyment. The Guardian describes the immersion of the game, "FIFA 15 is doing what Electronic Arts has always wanted to do – it is looking like the football we watch on our televisions, and it is playing in a way that makes us feel like we belong on the pitch and not in the stands or on the sofa." At least they’re consistent, which is more than can be said for the AI. A range of new save animations and improved intelligence means goalkeepers are more capable of responding to rebounds and deflections. At times they seem almost superhuman. And yet at the same time they’re prone to horrendous mistakes, letting daisy-cutters through their legs and exhibiting wildly unpredictable behaviour when the ball breaks loose in the penalty area. Team-mate positioning is extremely questionable, often leaving huge gaps for smart opponents to exploit, and they’re less likely than last year to make intelligent overlapping runs, even when you couldn’t make it clearer that you’re looking to play them in.
