Description

Described as being juniper and citrus forward, it is (in print at least) a classic gin that has a character that is very much ‘right up my street’. You can also explore the effects of aging on gin—something most gin is not subjected to—with Martin Miller's 9 Moons. This bottling rests the gin in previously used bourbon barrels for nine months to give it a fascinating sweetness of vanilla and oak. After 120 years of distilling whisky, Benromach Distillery in Speyside turned their hand to gin in July 2018. Taking its name and bottle design from the distinctive doors on the distillery, it makes for a striking red bottle. It’s modern and cool, and the green/aquamarine colours of the bottle mirror the forest and the sea, from which they get their signature botanicals. Having spent 5 years in Japan, Jenny dedicated time to refining her palate, sampling over 100 craft gins along the way. The aim behind the graft? To create a gin recipe of her very own, but with a unique and distinctive character that would make it stand out from the crowd.

Gin – The Gin Shelf Dog and Spoon Distillery; Science Project 6a Gin – The Gin Shelf

If you have yet to taste genever, it is unlike any other gin you've had. This style of gin is as if a soft Scotch whisky were married with gin, and Bols' malty feel is a perfect example. Based on Lucas Bols' original recipe from 1820, it has a wonderful balance of sweet malt and subdued juniper and citrus. It is triple distilled using equal parts malt wine and neutral grain spirits that are infused with natural flavors. Whilst the key flavour notes are retained, with pink peppercorn, juniper and delicate greenery remaining most prominent, the spirit remains remarkably creamy, carrying an elevated depth of flavour. Working with specialist spirits branding agency, Stranger & Stranger, the ‘Social Distillery’ has created something which is the envy of many. They wanted to produce something which depicts the truly stunning scenery found on the island – and what a job they’ve done! Disclosure: free sample bottle previously provided to both From the Gin Shelf and Jenny in BrightonIt’s a gently balanced gin. No single flavour really stands out above the rest. They all work together in harmony but it remains a gin that’s full-bodies and complex. With tonic Amongst other initiatives, all the teams spent botanicals are turned in to compost, and used to fertilise the flowers and trees on their farms land and aforementioned forest. And once in to the gin making itself, the discarded heads part of the spirit is handily converted into cleaning products for use around the farm (with a juniper fresh scent you can well imagine!)

16. SILENT POOL GIN

Launched in 2017, Hills & Harbour is distilled in the southwest Scotland, and is one of the few grain to glass distilleries in the country – meaning they make their own base spirit from scratch. Surrounded by the history and heritage of Sherwood Forest, the Peak District and Chatsworth house, the natural beauty of the rolling hills that surround the distillery are a constant source of inspiration to Seb and Tony. And it’s perhaps their proximity to such breathtaking landscape that has helped to shape their brands ethical stance. It’s a distillery that’s far younger than its classical branding would suggest. Launching in 2009, Sipsmith has already helped to pave the way for an uncompromising good gin that’s rich, smooth, and balanced. Furthermore, and perhaps most impressive of all, are the steps taken that I feel will truly ensure the longevity of the brand and build genuinely lasting relationships with those who visit the farm and experience the gin. On the bottom of the bottle there’s a hidden message in Latin – “Esse Quam Videri”, which means “to be, rather than to seem”.
