According to the IUCN, the Gorilla gorilla species (Western lowland gorillas and Cross River gorillas) is critically endangered, with a population reduction of more than 80 percent over three generations (a generation is about 22 years). It is unknown exactly how many of these gorillas are left. The WWF estimates that there are about 100,000 lowland gorillas still in existence. Other facts While some scientists may not find basic communication and tool use to be the most satisfactory signs of intelligence, others are exploring the consciousness of gorillas.

Where do gorillas sleep?

The western gorilla is divided into two subspecies – The western lowland gorilla and the Cross river gorilla. Eastern gorillas include the Mountain gorilla and the Eastern Lowland Gorilla (Also known as Grauers Gorilla). Of all the gorilla subspecies, the Eastern Lowland gorilla is the largest, followed by the mountain gorilla. The Cross River gorilla is the smallest of the lot. This means that exposure to human illnesses – even a cold - can have potentially detrimental impacts on gorillas as they are so genetically similar to us, but they haven't developed the necessary immunities. Adult full- grown male gorillas of this subspecies have an average body weight of up to 195 kg (430 pounds), while females have up to 100 kg (220 pounds), approximately half of the weight of male individuals.

Gorillas, like many other social animals, are dependent on stable family groups for survival and well-being. For Mountain gorilla groups, around 40% of them contain several closely related adult males.
