About this deal

GBW’s grass seed is tailored to the UK climate and works particularly well in wet and shaded areas. It comes in a large 10 kg bag which can cover an area of approximately 200 m²; however, if that sounds like too much, it will also keep for the next year as well, so any that you don’t use won’t be wasted.

In general, this seed doesn’t require quite as much maintenance after sowing as some other grass seeds; watering is still required, but you may not need to use as much water overall – only enough to keep the seeds moist. Best results are achieved by following the instructions closely, which can require scarifying the lawn before beginning – the results can be impressive if all of the pre- and post-application steps are completed, so it’s worth putting in the extra time. While ryegrass can be sowed on its own, I’ve always mixed it with other varieties as I’ve learnt from years of experience and testing, not to rely on just one type. Remember, different grasses can be added to an existing lawn to give it a different look or improved characteristics such as better resilience.Containing over 70% perennial ryegrass, this blend of grass seed is explicitly formulated by experts for UK gardens. Bentgrass is a fine ornamental grass that can be mown very short for a beautiful velvety lawn. It’s rather high-maintenance, so it’s usually mixed with fescue to make the lawn harder-wearing and weed-resistant. Many all-purpose grass seed mixes include a dash of bentgrass to soften the overall look of your lawn. What grass seed mix is best for me and my garden? It’s one of the best grass seed mixes for families who have energetic children or pets running around the lawn, who also want grass that they can flop down onto for a comfortable sunbathe. Football pitch vs posh lawn: If your lawn needs to withstand endless close encounters with kids, pets and BBQ guests, then go for a predominantly ryegrass mix. But if you want a smooth ornamental lawn, avoid ryegrass completely and go for bentgrass, with some fescue in the mix to help it survive underfoot.

All of the shade grass mixes I have grown have contained at least one fescue – a variety that is known to thrive in the shade.Application is straightforward, given that these seeds can be sown by hand straight out of the 10 kg bag. Depending on the state of your lawn, you might find that you need to use a lot of seed, especially if you have a larger garden; although GroundMaster states that one bag will cover an area of around 300 m², logically this will depend on how much your specific circumstances require. Wildlife Habitat: Lawns and grassy areas created with this seed blend provide habitat and food sources for various wildlife, such as birds, insects, and small mammals. These spaces support biodiversity and contribute to a more environmentally-friendly landscape. EU regulations legislate that a grass seed mix should be at least 70% – 80% pure. That of course leaves up to 20% – 30% of potential contamination from other grass types and / or weed seeds. Birds eating grass seed before it has a chance to germinate can be a very irritating waste of money, so it’s nice to see that Gro-Sure have factored in a solution to this problem with their Multi-Purpose Grass Lawn Seed. Damaged patches will need repeat treatments so purchasing more than the recommended amount is advised

Similarly versatile to the SUPERSTAR seed, this one is suitable for a variety of conditions including the typical shade as well as dry conditions due to its Perennial Ryegrass / Strong Creeping Red Fescue mix. We found it to germinate at around 5 to 10 days before continuing to grow and produce a full lawn in up to 6 weeks. The result? A lush green hardwearing lawn that will withstand anything your dog or other pets have to throw at it. Getting the right balance between hardwearing grass and a comfortable soft lawn isn’t easy; tough grass can be coarse, but softer grass easily wears out. I’ve sowed dozens of lawns here in the UK, and I feel the best time of year to grow grass seeds is in the autumn, after the scorching heat of summer but before the frosts. The grass will have time to harden over winter and will be strong enough for foot traffic by early summer.

I suggest you avoid products that contain only one variety; most good brands contain at least three different grass varieties, and I believe that this increases the chances of success. Mycorrhizal fungi can be added to the roots of almost all plants when dug into the garden or containers. This fungus extends the root system both deeper and broader.

Mowing height: Fine ornamental grass can and should be mowed quite close – as low as 1cm. Coarse ryegrass performs better if you let it grow a little more – up to 4cm. That said, any type of newly-sown grass should be left to grow up to around 7cm before you cut it for the first time.
