Hamster have for some time being a feature of many classrooms. Adored by teachers and children alike, these furry amigos have brightened up many a school day! There are two popular breeds of dwarf hamsters. Both are considered to be small hamster breeds. The first type is Phodopus campbelli, or the dwarf Campbell Russian hamster. A behavioral characteristic of hamsters is food hoarding. They carry food in their spacious cheek pouches to their underground storage chambers. When full, the cheeks can make their heads double, or even triple in size. [2] Hamsters lose weight during the autumn months in anticipation of winter. This occurs even when hamsters are kept as pets and is related to an increase in exercise. [21] Social behavior Hamsters fighting It is only if you look very closely that you will observe the more stout and compact configuration of the Winter White dwarf hamster. This is contrast to sleeker and mouse-like facial features of the Campbell’s dwarf hamster. However, if you don’t see this, don’t worry. Sometimes even professional breeders still get the two hamster breeds confused!Syrian Hamster – Syrian hamsters are a common type of hamster kept as a pet. They can grow up to 6 inches long and are usually golden brown with darker markings around their cheeks. Syrian hamsters tend to be more solitary, so they should be kept to one in a cage. Chinese Striped Hamster – The Chinese Striped hamster is a species of hamster that is native to central and eastern Asia. These hamsters live in long burrows and emerge to forage for food at night. European Hamster – The European hamster is a type of hamster native to a large area in Eurasia. It is considered an agricultural pest and is often hunted for its fur. While it is not considered endangered globally, it is critically endangered in many countries. European hamsters are crepuscular and eat mostly plant matter, like seeds, legumes, grasses, vegetables, and insects. They are often solitary. While various hamster breeds hail from around the globe, their common name was a gift from the Germans. Diamond league levels range from 55 to 79. Diamond users have a purple badge. The breeding season is from April to October in the Northern Hemisphere, with two to five litters of one to 13 young being born after a gestation period of 16 to 23 days. [20] Dwarf hamsters breed all through the year. Gestation lasts 16 to 18 days for Syrian hamsters, 18 to 21 days for Russian hamsters, 21 to 23 days for Chinese hamsters and 23 to 30 for Roborovski hamsters. The average litter size for Syrian hamsters is about seven pups, but can be as great as 24, which is the maximum number of pups that can be contained in the uterus. Campbell's dwarf hamsters tend to have four to eight pups in a litter, but can have up to 13. Winter white hamsters tend to have slightly smaller litters, as do Chinese and Roborovski hamsters. Hamster mothers are very protective and keep their babies in pouches inside their mouths if they sense danger. Campbell’s Dwarf Hamster – One of only two species of Russian dwarf hamsters, the Campbell’s Dwarf hamster is a very common pet store find. They were named after Charles William Campbell, who first caught one in Mongolia in 1904. They come in many colors and are friendly, boisterous, and active. Campbell’s Dwarf hamsters can become territorial if kept in groups. This means they should be kept in very large enclosures. Additionally, this species is genetically predisposed to developing diabetes.
