one-centimetre incision, rather than a cut of about a metre. The vein extracted is then used as a graft in exactly the same way. The School is set in the village of Harefield on the edge of the green belt and is adjacent to the commencement of agricultural land. The heart has to work harder to pump blood around the body. Symptoms resulting include chest pains, breathlessness and fainting – if untreated, it could lead to heart failure and death.

I am passionate about these new techniques. Evidence indicating the effectiveness of minimally invasive surgery has been published in many international publications. During the First World War a hospital was established at the mansion latterly known as Harefield Park for the treatment of injured Australians and New Zealanders. Many of those who died at the hospital are buried in the churchyard of St Mary’s Harefield, where they are commemorated by a memorial arch and a granite obelisk. Minimally invasive cardiac surgery – a success story for the NHS | Royal Brompton & Harefield hospitals Harefield is served by route 331 operating between Uxbridge and Ruislip, and route U9 between Uxbridge and Harefield Hospital. During World War I, Harefield Park was used as an Australian military hospital. The bodies of the servicemen who died there were buried with full military honours within the graveyard of St Mary's Church; the area, which also included the ground where the Harefield Place building stood, became a military cemetery. Research has shown these procedures are safe, when they are performed regularly by surgeons who are experienced in these techniques. Benefits include a shorter hospital stay and less bleeding, so less likelihood of a transfusion being required. Patients also experience a reduced risk of wound infection, better recovery following their surgery and often less pain. And, of course, they also have much smaller scars too. In the 1930s Harefield became an isolation hospital for tuberculosis patients, laying the foundations of its expertise in lung conditions. In the late 1940s the hospital became part of the new National Health Service and began to develop its expertise in heart disease, in addition to its lung specialisation. The resident added she fears what will come next after ULEZ. She said: “It's never going to stop here. We all know it's going to be pay-per-mile next. Look at how much money they spent putting all those cameras up, you think [ Transport for London ] put all of those up for a few non-compliant cars? Of course not." The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), a number of directors of Watford Football Club, and the London Borough of Hillingdon worked together to seek to bring about a significant improvement in educational and health standards.

St Mary's Parish Church (off Church Hill) is Harefield's oldest building and an important focal point for the Harefield community. A priest is first mentioned in the manor of Harefield in the Domesday Book (1086). In the late 12th century the advowson was given to the Knights Hospitallers, although the Newdigate family later became patrons of the church. The church building has some medieval features, but was restored and altered in 1768, and again in 1841. [7] A gold plaque in the Royal British Legion Hall honours the exceptional bravery of both Goodlake VC and Ryder VC. In 2011, Hillingdon Council erected a blue plaque in honour of the courage of Kinross VC at the place of his birth on the anniversary of his birthday, 17 February. By 1813 limekilns and copper mills lay along the northern part of the canal, and there were coal wharves north of Moorhall. The industrial area continued to expand throughout the century, but away from the canal Harefield remained one of the few places in Middlesex where the ancient pattern of an agricultural village survived into the second half of the 19th century, mainly because of the absence of a main road or railway. However, at Harefield Hospital my team and I offer a comprehensive minimally invasive programme that includes coronary bypass, valve repair and replacement and surgery for arrhythmia. We routinely perform a wide range of these procedures – and have done so for the past 15 years. Breakspear House (Breakspears), a Grade 1 listed building, originally constructed in the 17th century also falls within Harefield.Harefield has the feel of a village and some residents don't believe they should be included within the ULEZ boundary Russell Grant (born 1951), TV astrologer, grew up in Harefield and was head chorister at St Mary's parish church

A significant advantage of these new vanguard of minimally invasive treatments, many of which use heart valves made from animal tissue rather than the conventional mechanical valves, is patients do not need to take blood thinning drugs for the rest of their lives. The topic of ULEZ is like blood in the water to people in Harefield, with Mr Gupta’s account prompting residents coming in for a lunchtime coffee to give their two pence on the matter. One resident launched into the conversation, saying: “I don’t know anyone that thinks ULEZ is a good idea. At Harefield, 100 per cent of CABGs are performed this way. This has resulted in less pain for patients, shorter hospital stays and significantly improved patient satisfaction. Our research shows we have cut the rate of infection using the EVH method to only two per cent compared to up to 20 per cent with conventional methods. We have performed nearly 7,000 procedures – making us one of the busiest and most experienced centres in Europe. What next? The new Edwards Intuity valve, which is also made from cow tissue, has all of these advantages too. It doesn’t need stitches as it’s held in place by a fibrous ring at the base of where the original valve was. The new valve is fixed to a stent (tube-like mesh) made of stainless steel which holds it under the fibrous ring. She was one of the thousands of people who showed up in Central London to protest ULEZ’s expansion, attending marches on three separate occasions. However, she said she knew, even at the time, that it was unlikely to change the Mayor’s mind.In terms of risks, statistically there is 0.05 per cent chance of a stroke, and a mortality risk of less than 2 per cent – and the promise of an excellent long-term outcome.
