David Melling was born in Oxford and still lives near the city. His father was a sculptor and Melling inherited his artistic leanings. He previously worked as a photographer and as an animation artist for films including the much-loved Father Christmas, based on the book by Raymond Briggs.

Some of the Douglas’ speech is written in capital letters. Why has the author chosen to do this? Do you know the differences between upper and lower case letters? Melalui ceritanya, anak-anak diajak untuk mengenal aneka ukuran, sambil membantu Doughlass menemukan pelukannya. Ada yang terlalu tinggi, ada yang terlalu pendek. Look at the use of punctuation within the story. Where have speech marks and exclamation marks been used? This very special anniversary edition of Hugless Douglas’ first adventure is a must for fans of this much-loved series, which has sold over 1.6 million copies in 26 languages to date. David Melling is one of the UK’s best-loved author-illustrators and his stories combine brilliantly imaginative illustrations with an endearing sense of what it is like to be a small child learning about the world. Dougals annoys an owl and makes a rabbit furious, by wiping his miserable nose on its fluffy end. Poor Douglas. The rabbit thoughtfully leads Douglas home to his cave where his Mum is waking up, ready to give him the warmest, cuddliest hug ever.

Hugless Douglas is a simple, enjoyable story about the bond between a child and a loved one. It could be used in PSHE to highlight the importance of developing relationships, and in understanding the importance of showing compassion to others. I was a little disappointed that at the end of the story it only shows Douglas wanting a hug from his mum.He knows that the best hugs are tall, wide, cosy and soft and he gets into some amusing situations hugging things that don’t quite match up to the one he’s searching for.

I loved in the details in the pictures including Douglas the bear’s own teddy bear, the rabbit’s many carrots and the picture of carrots hung up, and all the types of hugs at the end. Mannie takes her doll and her toy elephant Lilliput on an adventure along the road. But she feels frightened by the sun going behind the clouds and the thunder rumbling... A book for families, for dads and for illustration fans, this is in the same territory as the phenomenally successful Guess How Much I Love You , but with a subtler sentimentality that might appeal to a new generation of parents. This is a sweet picture book about a bear who wakes up from hibernation and wants a hug. The story follows Douglas’s many attempts at finding the perfect kind of hug. It isn’t until the end of the book that we find out that Douglas is actually a young bear, and he couldn’t find the right hug because his mom hadn’t woken up yet.

I suppose it’s a slightly sappy story but I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I’m sure I’d have loved it as a kid and after all young kids are its target audience. A great Hugless Douglas book. In this one he has his birthday and lined up his presents to open later but his cousins ruin it by opening the presents...
