Pros: Loved the dedication at the beginning of the book which was: “For every student who missed their school library during the pandemic.” The incident in Ruby’s past is bad - but it definitely seems a tragic accident. I really liked this, I had previously read Your Turn to Die by Sue Wallman and liked that too, so was happy to get to this. I liked Ruby a lot as a character and understood her and her motivations. There's lots of twists and turns which kept me guessing. What I had forgotten most of all was how quiet a crime scene is. No breath but yours. The faint breeze that stirs over lifeless hair and clothes. The glassy, open emptiness of dead eyes. It’s almost peaceful, a violent death, before they come in with heavy boots and tape and cameras. Before it becomes a story, out there in the world for people to read. Before it’s something that happened to you. This was my favorite novel from Claire McGowan to date. I loved the alternating time lines and characters. The story about Casey being a nanny for a wealthy family in L.A. was very intriguing. I thought I had all of the answers figured out in this mystery but I was clearly wrong. I highly recommend this fantastic novel! What are the odds the both of them would be accused of such heinous crimes and exonerated and found not guilty?

A year later in 1998, Julie is in college in Boston. As she enters the shower, she notices the words "I still know" written in the steam on the shower door. A dark figure crashes through it as she screams. Meanwhile, there's Scott, the main writer of the school newspaper, and some people who seem to be in thrall to him for some reason - Euan, Khalid, Naz, and Amber (I might be forgetting one). Ruby starts making friends with Euan, which I liked a lot. She starts to understand stuff about how the school works (in a One of Us us Lying kind of way). Then someone turns up dead and all eyes turn on Ruby... again.
