When using a Nintendo 3DS portal in SuperChargers or Imaginators, the portal will have trouble detecting SWAP Force Skylanders, making them unplayable. This version of the game stores all scanned figures in a database, similarly to the 3DS versions of Swap Force, Trap Team and SuperChargers Racing, allowing them to be played at any time. Skylanders Imaginators supports the 300+ character toys from all previous Skylanders games - including Skylanders SuperChargers, Skylanders Trap Team, Skylanders SWAP Force, Skylanders Giants and Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Kids can enjoy the characters in the real-world and figures and in the virtual game world as partners to save Skylands. As players add new Skylanders to their collection, they expand their in-game experiences. The older portals from Spyro's Adventure/ Giants portals are interchangeable, and will also work with SuperChargers and Imaginators. However, several limitations will apply.* Many Skylanders refer to the action of being placed on the Portal of Power as "Booming" or "portalling". This also applies to the villains in Trap Team.

You can change almost any of your customization options for your Skylander at any time, with two major exceptions. Firstly, you obviously can't change your Skylander's element so that it's different from the Imaginite Creation Crystal element it's stored in. Secondly, and more troubling, you can't change your Skylander's combat class. Once you choose how your Skylander fights, it's permanent. It can look and sound any way you want, but it will only fight using that specific weapon type. You can't reset your Crystal, or at least not officially; some users have reported success using a Nintendo 3DS Skylanders game and a glitch to effectively wipe the Crystal, but it isn't officially supported.In Skylanders: Ring of Heroes, the portals are once again redesigned, having the size of the original Spyro's Adventure portals, but bear a more futuristic appearance, and are worn by the Portal Masters as a medallion/amulet. An important type of Imaginators figure that does not have these platforms is the Creation Crystal, a new figure type introduced with Imaginators, that allows you to create your own Imaginator characters in the game.

Notably, the Nintendo Switch version of Imaginators does not feature a portal, instead using the NFC capabilities of the console's Joy-Con-R controller to communicate with Skylanders figures. It is also less circular in its design, with a shape that instead resembles more of a rounded rectangle, or perhaps octagonal.
