Some stories are mere adaptations of the series various episodes.However, this would be inconsistent with the Octopus repeatedly appearing in the series, normally chasing Captain Hook, as the Octopus doesn't seem to have any interest in eating Hook until the events of Return to Neverland. So it is likely that this is a separate canon. Though it is possible the octopus himself forgot about Hook years after the events of series and then remembered him once again in the sequel.
