Each player takes the role of a Monster: see the choices above. Interestingly, the Monsters have no special powers: it’s the Ally you choose that has the special powers!! (This kinda reminded us of Minecraft : Heroes of the Village from a few weeks ago when the pets had the special abilities, not the villagers … is this a new trend?)
There are lot of punch outs: minions (left), crystals (upper right) , and Support tiles (lower right). Like most cooperative games, the game alternates between “ some bad stuff happens” (from the Minions and Boss dice) and “ some good stuff happens” (from the player dice, Power cards, and Support tokens). There is a notion of movement, as players can usually only do things if they are the zone with the thing of interest. meeple: a small figure used as a playing piece in certain board games, having a stylized human form. Well for starters, King Of Monster Island is a co-op game for 2-5 players and this time you’re all working together to battle a single huge boss monster that is intent on opening a portal on an island for its own nefarious purposes. Straight out of the gate, you can see the production values of this new iteration. Not only is the island board bigger than Tokyo by a significant margin, but there is now a 3D volcano dice tower in the centre! It’s this tower that is the most spectacular aspect of Monster Island, but also epitomises one of it’s biggest problems: randomness. Before I go further on that, let me explain how the game works.
King of Tokyo/New York/Monster Island general monster overview
Frequently, I will keep rulebooks on the chair next to me when learning a game. It keeps the rulebook out of the main game flow, but in a place where I can glance/reach/read easily. I call this The Chair Test: Can I put a rulebook fully open on a chair next to me for easy reading? Monster Island was originally supposed to appear in TriStar's Godzilla 2, which is the cancelled sequel to the 1998 film. In the end, the production of King of Monster Island is great, the game looks good, and it is fun overall. If you like the world of King of Tokyo, you may very well like King of Monster Island! Just be aware that this is NOT just a “ co-op King of Tokyo“: it’s a lot more complicated than you might first expect. That’s not bad, just be aware King of Monster Island isn’t the simple game that King of Tokyo is. Appendix I liked King of Monster Island and my friends liked it. We’d probably give it a 7/10 overall. The production is pretty great, the gameplay is pretty fun, and it flows fairly well. It works best at 1-3 players.

That said, there’s definitely more to think about when it comes to what you’re aiming for with each roll, and how you apply the results you eventually get. Monster Island first premiered on June 1, 2019 on the Syfy channel, [2] exactly one day after Godzilla: King of the Monsters. In the end, you’ll notice I ended up playing with the rulebook up on the table (see above) taking up tons of space!
There are a bunch of dials to note health and fame for the good guys and the bad guys (upper left), some Power cards (lower left) and volcano (right). Each turn consists of two phases, the boss phase and the monster phase. In the boss phase, the boss first activates its ability, then you roll some of the new red dice into the volcano. These dice then randomly split across the different regions of the island and the boss moves accordingly. After this the boss’s minions (yes there are minions now, no they aren’t yellow!) are activated and then its dice are resolved.

Whether it’s the original King of Tokyo or its spin-off title King of New York, bigger is always going to be better in a board game themed around Kaiju fighting one another in various major cities. King of Monster Island is easily the largest iteration the series has seen yet. Monster Island has appeared in Atari's Godzilla games. In Godzilla: Save the Earth, it is a playable arena that has a sub-arena, Monster Island Bay. The island has a mud pit, a waterfall, and even a volcanic section. Some of the challenges like Vorillium Basketball and Monster Bowling appear to take place on Monster Island, but its never actually said whether they do or not.
Experience is a new concept for King of Monster Island. You don’t just control a monster, but also an ‘ally’, such as the Media or the Military. Your ally doesn’t have a direct board presence; rather, like the boss, you can activate them for useful support abilities that get more powerful as your stars accumulate. This split in your upgrade path between cubes (to buy cards) and stars (to improve your allies) offers some interesting decision-making as you look for synergies between the two. Because is a greater menace is lurking. Something big enough to threaten every monster and make them fight together against the same enemy…These red dice activate the “bad news” parts of the game: they summon minions, give the Boss fame, and build crystals. In Godzilla: Unleashed, the island is the first location to be bombarded with the crystals. The resulting chaos lets the Earth Defenders successfully deactivate the forcefield barriers and escape. You roll once, keep what you want, then re-roll again keeping what you want, then one final re-roll. Just like King of Tokyo. Or Yahtzee. Or many other games with dice. It’s what the dice do that is interesting! Zatu has an excellent range of games and for most of them the best prices too. Delivery is always fast and I have never received a game in bad condition. 10/10 would recommend.
