Having recently tried the 8 year old and two different 16 year olds at the distillery at Lagavulin along with a Director's cask I believe... I was not treated to the 10 year old. Lagavulin celebrated their 200th anniversary in 2016, producing a number of limited edition bottlings. These included a Lagavulin 8 Year Old (which would eventually become part of the distillery’s core range), a Lagavulin 25 Year Old and the Lagavulin 12 Year Old (a regular feature of Diageo’s Special Releases). Since 2010, Lagavulin has sponsored the Islay Jazz Festival and began hosting the Lagavulin Jazz Festival in 2017. Each year, Lagavulin releases a limited-edition whisky to commemorate the festival. The latest 2021 edition was released in November 2021 with just 3,000 units available for sale. The 13-year old cask strength whisky was finished in mezcal casks and is described as having smoky, meaty aromas and notes of spicy wood and smoke-dried jalapeño peppers. It strength was critiqued by a literay icon. No it's wise I suppose this has to be considered the smoke here scotches but it's not like I get a ton of smoke off the nose... It's like a fine rich spicy wine... In the realm of Scotch whisky, Lagavulin is as iconic as the island it’s distilled on. In fact, it’s one of the oldest distilleries found in the heart of Islay — even predating some of its ultra-famous neighbors. Its complex origins involving illegal production and smuggling make for an interesting story, but what sets this Scotch apart from giants like The Macallan and The Balvenie is its distinct flavor. I just got my brother his first bottle of Ardbeg 10 and he is loving it. His first Islay was Bowmore 12 and I would love to see it ranked against Ardbeg 10.
