About this deal

Located on the shores of the Lagavulin Bay, the Lagavulin distillery is home to two pairs of stills. Lagavulin has a long distillation time, and many believe this imparts the intense richness of the famous single malt whisky. A touch of vanilla and toffee gives this malt a sweet base and the big maritime saltiness is very obvious here as well. Again, very meaty and savoury. Bitter lemon peels and limes. Earthy peat and some minerality. The mouthfeel is quite creamy as well. Big big citrus hit. Classic Lagavulin peat, it's dark, rich and earthy with a note of iodine and rubber. A wave of salty sea breeze. Some hard cheese like parmesan. This develops into baked apples and lemons peels. Very savoury, some charred meats or smoked bacon. Dried salted fish. Very little oak influence, slight vanilla but it is definitely spirit forward.

The latest incumbent of the position is Jordan Paisley, who joins having previously worked with Diageo’s Islay distilleries as Performance Lead. Paisley entered the Scotch whisky industry after working in the Merchant Navy. He qualified as an engineer, working primarily in the North Sea before taking on a role in anti-piracy vessels off the Somalian coast. Lagavulin 8 approaches with a youthful, fresh nose. Its peaty smoke is bold yet lighter than the 16, infused with a clean, zesty citrus note, quite a surprise for an Islay malt. Despite its lighter smokiness, it allows the sweeter and fruitier undertones to be appreciated, presenting an enjoyable balance. Lagavulin 8 offers an intriguing introduction to the world of Islay whiskies. It’s peaty yet refreshing. Light yet complex. The smoky sweetness dances around on your palate, flirting with citrusy hints before leaving a warm, lingering finish. A special edition bottling of Lagavulin released for the 2021 Fèis Ìle festival. While that year's celebrations were sadly confined to the virtual world, the taste of this 13-year-old whisky is very real and benefits from a delightful finishing period in port-seasoned American oak casks.Value for money: With the dramatic rise in the price of the classic 16-year-old, Lagavulin’s 8-year-old is likely to be the only offering that’s actually still affordable for many whisky drinkers. While that in itself seems a terrible shame, it’s reassuring to know there’s still a decent Lagavulin within reach.

This was originally released as the distillery’s 200th (bicentenary) anniversary limited edition, but has since been added to the core range. With that, the information available online dries up. To my palate, this seems to be missing the sherry portion found in the 16-year. Like the 12-year, I would guess this is entirely from ex-bourbon casks. This 8 year lagavulin is just another attempt, in my opinion, for Diageo to “dumb down” another one of their brands for profit.
