About this deal

Fortunately, LG offers a Cinematic Movement setting – the most effective motion-compensated frame interpolation among different TV brands – to mitigate these issues without introducing significant interpolation artefacts or the unnaturally smooth soap opera effect (SOE). That said, when watching 50Hz broadcast material, you’re best off disabling TruMotion altogether. With it active, there were occasions when I noticed visible microstuttering during hand gestures and facial movements, and frame skipping in slow-panning shots, particularly on stronger motion settings. There is Freeview Play for UK users that includes the catch-up and on-demand apps. Paid/subscription apps are plentiful, with every big name supported in Disney+, Netflix, Apple TV+, Prime Video, Sky Store, YouTube and Twitch; to Hulu, Max, Fubo TV, and more in the US. LG Channels has 200 free-to-watch channels as well as films to rent and a hub for Korean content as well. One notable addition is support for different user profiles, allowing multiple users to have personalised settings and preferences for content recommendations, apps and more. This improvement makes it easier for family members to enjoy a tailored viewing experience on a shared TV. The LG G3 range is available in 55, 65, 77 and 83-inch versions, with a 97-inch version to come later - though note that the 83- and 97-inch sizes don’t benefit from the MLA technology that so transforms the other screen sizes.

That 70% figure is compared to traditional OLED as used in the LG B3 – the screens LG was putting in flagship TVs about 3 years ago – so it’s not quite as drastic as it sounds. But given OLED’s notoriously limited brightness, any ground gained on this front is welcomed. Connections are all built into the TV, rather than using an external connections box as might have been a nice option for a TV so focused on wall mounting. The connections are pleasingly numerous, though, including in four HDMI ports that all support the full 48Gbps bandwidth possible with the latest 2.1 standard - meaning they all support the latest console and PC gaming features. OLED image retention can be managed with the Screensaver mode (leaves no static images on the screen), Screen Move (which shifts pixels slightly), and Logo Brightness (which reduces how bright static logos on a screen are). Turn the TV on for the first time and it’ll boot in Auto Power mode to conserve energy. This can be changed at any time. Picture Quality In terms of native 10-bit gradation, there was some posterisation in the skies of The Martian, but I was able to suppress it effectively by using the Smooth Gradation de-contouring filter. I wouldn’t advise going higher than the least aggressive setting of “Low”, however, as the “Medium” and “High” scrubbed away some fine detail. LG G3 OLED review: HDR performanceThe slightly noisy look that we'd sometimes notice in dark scenes on LG OLEDs has largely gone on the G3 too, while at the other end of the spectrum, LG takes full advantage of its new TV's extra brightness threshold by delivering much more brightness and intensity in peak light areas without 'clipping' subtle shading details. Cinematic Movement is the least aggressive, stabilising 24fps content but not necessarily removing its natural stutter. Natural isn’t as the name implies, with more jittery movement watching 1917 and it also has the effect of making the lower half of the soldiers’ bodies look a little fake. Soap Opera Effect (SOE) settles in with this setting. The G3 and Z3 models come with a built-in ATSC 3.0 tuner to meet the latest signal standard in TV broadcasts in the US – and you won’t find this in the cheaper C3 / B3 models.

From the rear view, the OLED65G3 is uniformly flat to sit flush against a wall. Connections are both side and downward facing, positioned on the left-hand side (as you look at the TV). There are clips to slide cables through to keep the rear area free and navigate out the bottom of the TV. LG states that this is largely down to improvements made to its colour processing - though I guess it's also true that the way MLA works means there isn’t actually much more brightness being produced by the OLED pixels than there was before. The brightness increase is predominantly down to the light the OLEDs being produced emerging through the screen more efficiently.Moving on, the LG OLED65G3 is incredibly bright out of the box. Small highlights fizz with intensity, there’s barely any reduction in the brightness output of larger objects on screen, with average brightness across various picture modes considerably brighter than the Sony A95K, contributing to brighter white tones, although with Dolby Vision content this position is reversed. Oh, how wrong I was. There’s of course the technical advancements, such as OLED Evo and Micro Lens Array, that have been made to give it next-generation picture quality, which we cover in this article about things you need to know before buying an OLED –but then there’s the overall experience that it delivers.

Helped by the new Alpha 9 Gen 6 processor, the LG G3’s video processing is excellent. Its upscaling algorithm retrieves sharp details from lower-resolution content, providing an impressive viewing experience for various types of media. Video-mode and film-mode deinterlacing were top-notch without any notable errors to report. The C-series and G-series differ in that the latter comes with a bigger boost in the picture and audio departments, as well as boasting the new Micro Lens Array panel developed by LG Display.Assuming the G3 does not come with a stand, wondering what G1 or G2 owners did while they wait to mount their TVs. The LG stand is quite expensive, and also has an upward tilt that won't work for me. Another innovative feature is the MultiView function, allowing users to watch two different sources simultaneously on the same screen, essentially dividing the screen into two separate viewing areas. This functionality is perfect for multitasking, such as watching a movie while keeping an eye on a live sports event, or playing a video game while monitoring a news broadcast. However, while displaying two separate HDMI feeds is supported, it has to be done by selecting the “Dual PC” option, which tops out at 4K 60Hz. As was the case with G2, the G3 is primarily designed for wall mounting, so doesn’t come with a tabletop stand. The G2 was referred to as LG’s “Gallery edition” OLED for this reason, but the brand is marketing the G3’s design as “Zero Gap” due to the way it fits flush against your wall. While LG’s webOS interface remains our favourite among various TV brands when it comes to ease of use and intuitiveness, especially in combination with the aforementioned Magic Remote, the company’s decision to move towards a full-screen experience last year didn’t go down well with some viewers. In the 1st year of the warranty, panel, parts, and labor costs are covered. In the 2nd - 5th year of the warranty, only panels are covered, and labor will be charged. This streamlined feature allows for easy adjustments of volume, brightness, picture mode and other common settings, making it more convenient to fine-tune your viewing experience. The main talking point of the G3 is its brightness. LG traditionally debuts new light-enhancing tech in its pricier G Series models before bringing those features to lesser models, and it’s no different this year. On the upside, the new virtual 9.1.2 mixing system and built-in Dolby Atmos decoding manage to create a sense of the soundstage not just spreading well beyond the edges of the TV (up as well as to left and right), but also actually wrapping around the sides of your seating position. WebOS 23 also brings picture personalisation using deep learning technology to the LG G3. After guiding users through a series of on-screen images using the “Personalised Picture Wizard” to determine their preferences, this advanced feature analyses the content being displayed and optimises the picture settings accordingly, delivering image quality tailored to the specific content and user. Colours also appeared more vibrant when watching WCG (wide colour gamut) content thanks to a combination of the higher brightness and LG’s processing, although QD-OLED TVs still have the upper hand in outright colour luminance due to their RGB subpixel make-up as opposed to WRGB, which results in some colour dilution.
