Description

Cerused wood is also known as cerused oak or limed oak because it’s often found on this species of wood. Oak’s highly visible grain makes it one of the surfaces for the finish. But you can ceruse any open-grained hardwood (i.e., those with large pores) such as mahogany. After you brush one to two coats of liming wax onto the wood and buff away the excess with a cloth, the deep ridges of the woodgrain willhold onto some of the white coloring. Applying liming wax requires a bit of preparation and a careful process, but the resulting vintage look makes the effort worthwhile. Here, we present the technique in a comprehensive guide that covers every step, from preparation to final buffing. Necessary Tools and Preparation for Applying Liming Wax Liming is a traditional wood finishing technique that was once commonly used on floorboards, furniture, and beams. It enhances the wood’s natural grain with a white tint, giving it a lighter, aged, and weathered look. More importantly, it can extend the life expectancy of your timber without having to seal the wood.

If you want to adjust the amount of White Wax anywhere, you can do this using Clear Chalk Paint™ Wax – it acts almost like a magic eraser! Dip a lint-free cloth in your Clear Wax and then use it to rub off any White Wax where you don’t want it. Do this while the White Wax is still soft. Liming wax looks great on hardwood such as oak or other open-grained woods because it enhances the natural grain of the wood. This is why limewashing is a good solution if you want to preserve the wood while also adding interest to it. Do not attempt to sand your wood after it has been stained, as this will remove the color and create a blotchy appearance. Pre-raising the grain and sanding it before staining will reduce the roughness after staining. Liming wax and varnish or polyurethane will help create a smooth finish. If you must sand it after staining, do so with a light hand. Step 4: Applying the wax

It’s called Cerusing Finish (or sometimes Limed Finish), and it’s a process of rubbing a contrasting color into the pores of wood to highlight the patterns of the wood grain, similar to a whitewashing technique. Another popular use for liming wax is to apply it as a finishing touch after a piece of furniture has been painted. The lime wax can be worked into the paintwork, giving the piece a distressed, shabby-chic look that’s incredibly popular in contemporary interior design. When sealed with a top layer of clear wax, the liming wax offers a long-lasting, water-resistant finish that’s perfect for everyday use. Why Liming Wax is Ideal for Certain Projects Liming wax has long been used as a finish on exposed wood. This method is especially useful when you want to improve the look of wood by lightening the grain. The result will highlight the grain while giving your timber a more uniform, aged appearance that can look quite expensive without much effort. The next step is to strip and remove the old tired finish. This needs to be done in a well ventilated area and we recommend to wear personal protective equipment. Apply Liberon Fine Wood Stripper onto the surface and wait for around 15 to 20 minutes until the finish starts to react and bubble. You may now need to apply another fine coat of stripper to wet the area again and then use a scraper to remove the first layer. Re-apply the wood stripper and again wait around 15 minutes. Now use a very course wire wool ( grade 4 Liberon Steel Wool is ideal) to remove the last of the stripper and finish. Always wire wool in the same direction of the grain of the wood. You will start to see the natural colour and grain show through the wood. Scrape Off the old finish with Liberon fine wood stripper Steel wool the excess stripper So the very first thing you need to know for the project is what the base color you are looking for. I was going for an aged pine look with the liming wax adding even further age to the overall appearance. Starting off with raw pine, it looked anything but aged.Pinewood is a popular type of softwood that is very lightweight and strong, although not as strong as other types of hardwood. Pinewood is known for its elasticity, which allows it to resist shrinking and swelling when exposed to the elements. Thanks to its durability and affordable price, pinewood is a very popular option for indoor furniture. One common mistake is to confuse liming wax with lime wash. While both can give a whitewash effect to wood, they’re fundamentally different products with separate application processes. Limewash is a type of paint, while liming wax is a finishing product. Another typical error is to use wet liming wax on sealed or painted wood. For best results, apply liming wax on bare wood, particularly open-grained timber, where the white pigment can settle into the grooves. Liming wax, a transformative tool for wood refinishing, adds a whitewashed aesthetic and shine to furniture. Perfect for DIYers and woodworking professionals, it’s a technique ideally used when you aim for a vintage or distressed look while preserving wood’s natural beauty. What Is Liming Wax Exactly? Allow a few days to dry before adding the final topcoat. This is to allow any outgassing to happen and the paint layers to harden. I would love to do this on oak kitchen cabinets. I don’t have a big kitchen so it’s a small project. Don’t really want do paint them. This seems like a great alternative. Thoughts??

And I did that in 3 easy steps – paint, dark wax, and liming wax. Can you see why I’m crazy about it? Oh and if you missed Poldark, go watch! Liming wax is, according to Bob Villa, a mix of liming paste and a wax made of either carnauba, beeswax, petroleum or shellac. A liming finish has been popular for outdoor barns and outbuildings for centuries and has provided a measure of sanitizing, and also results in the classic pastoral white barn look. Liming finishes for indoor furniture has been used as a replacement for earlier lead based whitening finishes. Liming wax should be used if you want to accentuate the grain of the wood or the architectural details of a piece. So it’s whitewash?

What is Liming Wax and How To Use It - Real Milk Paint

Raising the grain is also a useful step when you want to stain pinewood and use liming wax with pine. This extra step will help the grains catch the liming wax better when the wax is applied, which will allow the natural grain to shine through the layer of liming wax. If you have a piece of wood with a strong, visible grain to it – something like oak – you can really bring out this wood grain with liming wax. This isn’t a difficult technique to learn. You don’t need to bring out any paints – all you need is White Chalk Paint® Wax, a Wax Brush and a lint-free cloth. Liming wax is perfect for projects that require an enhanced rustic, antique appeal. It’s versatile, easy to use, and doesn’t compromise the wood’s original features. When you use liming wax, your wooden pieces will stand out with a shine and an attractive, whitened grain pattern. How to Use Liming Wax: A Step-by-Step Guide

Waxed wood can be scrubbed with a solution of hot water and strong detergent, rinsed with hot water and when dry, wiped over with a rag dampened with white spirit.
