That EPG may well be cached, I'm sure it has to be, but it is displayed at lightning speed on the screen when requested. My DigitalStream was significantly slower in operation as was the Goodmans that (temporarily) replaced that, any of the multitude of Humax boxes prior to the DigitalStream too. You could often see the programs being updated one by one as the data loaded, jumping to a different day caused another visible rebuild. Jumping two or three days ahead and you could be in for some thumb twiddling while you waited. With the Manhattan there is no waiting. You can jump from today to seven days hence and not see any delays, at any time. It really is fast. What you are saying is change the input to TV and watch a program while the PVR is recording the other two that you have selected? By the way I hadn't noticed but while recording two programs you can watch a previously recorded program at the same time. Record 2 programmes at once. Need to record more? When retune events were signalled by the broadcasters you could be prompted to retune more frequently than necessary. The remote is laid out clearly with reasonably sized buttons that have a reassuring feel to them when pressed. I'm reasonably sure you can watch one recording whilst two others are taking place, but don't hold me to that. When you turn your T2•R on for the first time after it has updated, a message will be displayed confirming the update has taken place successfully Fixed an issue when using the T2-R with a Pioneer VSX-920-K AV receiver that caused the audio to be lost.

The T2•R can also be manually set to a resolution in the Picture & Sound section of the Settings menu. This could cause an issue if you set a resolution (e.g. 1080p), then move the T2•R to another TV that doesn't support that resolution. When trying to set a recording that clashed with two other recordings, one of which was the second part of a split event, the system would fail to present the Recording Clash prompt and the event could not be booked. The neatness, clarity and responsiveness of the T2-R's everyday user interface is worth praising. It's driven by a decent handset that can also operate many TVs. Programmes deleted and emptied from the Trash could not be re-recorded and any repeats were indicated as already recorded.

Picture quality is good. It claims to upscale SD programmes, I'm not sure that the picture on the SD recordings or live channels is as quite as good as when I watch them directly on my Panasonic TV, but then they are SD and not HD. The HD programmes and recordings are excellent. I thought that the SD ones just looked very, very slightly less sharp than they did on previous boxes, but without a side by side comparison it is difficult to make any meaningful comparison. At this price you don't get luxuries like app control; use the electronic programme guide (EPG) to select channels for viewing or recording instead. For the money it is a very good straight forward no nonsense PVR. Very responsive remote no delay button pushes. Nice user interface. Two year warrantee. As it is a Freeview PVR the watch an extra channel facility is irrelevant as almost all viewers will have it connected to a Freeview TV probably with HD.

When a major retune event (e.g. addition of a new multiplex) is signalled by the broadcasters, the T2-R will display a prompt to retune. This can be done straight away or postponed until convenient. Such retune events normally occur no more than once or twice a year. Though this was thought fixed in 1.03, a further issue was discovered whereby seemingly randomly, channels or scheduled recordings could be removed during the Automatic Service Update in standby. This could happen in locations receiving signals from multiple transmitters with signal variations. The specification here is basic but well implemented, and Manhattan's new styling is a nice improvement on its boxy designs of old. And the T2-R nicely whets the appetite for the company's incoming T3-R, which adds streaming bells and whistles. The T2•R was designed for HD, which requires HDMI. However, if you have an older TV that doesn’t have HDMI, the T2•R can still almost certainly be connected to it using the Manhattan Analogue AV Kit (not included). The Manhattan T3-R is a powerhouse. It’s obviously got processing power to spare because it zips around the Freeview Play user interface – itself a thing of beautiful simplicity – with bristling ease. It’s a joy to use, which isn’t something we thought we’d be saying about a Freeview set-top box. The Automatic Service Update (ASU) previously took place every time the T2-R entered standby. It now takes place only once overnight.
