The headphones are charged via microUSB cable with a small LED light showing power state. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian There are wireless and non-wireless versions of the Marshall Major III. I’ve tried both, and there’s quite a price disparity between them. Marshall is almost a decade into making headphones at this point, and its designs have been refined to a point where they don’t need to change all that much year-to-year. The improved padding and lighter earcups still produce loud, clear sound that suits a wider variety of genres. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian Battery life is exceptional, with 60 hours of wireless playtime on a single charge; that should be more than enough to get you through your weekly commute, and it leaves many of the best wireless headphones in the dust.

In addition, the Major III aren’t as well built, or attractive, as the MID Bluetooth, currently available for just a little more.

The Marshall Major III Bluetooth are another brilliant pair of wireless on-ear headphones from the British audio brand that bring great sound, very long battery life and classic styling. Removing the dedicated power button means there is just a Micro-USB charging port (not USB-C, sadly) and 3.5mm headphone port for either listening to the headphones in passive mode or for friends to connect their own wired headphones so you can share music. Compared to similar on-ear models, the price sits comfortably in the mid-range and they are one of the cheaper models on offer from Marshall. They offer a much wider sound with more three dimensional imaging. I can get lost in tunes played through the Audio-Technica ATH-M50XBT, where I tend to bob along on the surface of them when wearing the Marshall Major III Voice.

They’re slightly bassier than the Beats Solo Pro, but this is mainly because the Solo Pro aren’t bassy at all by Beats standards. For example, the inner part of the cup pad uses a smoother, softer synthetic leather, plus there’s ultra-soft velour inside the pad’s hole. The Google link-up is separate to the standard Bluetooth link-up, and the Google one failed on me a few times. Of course, most of you will only have to pair up a few times, if not once. Clarity is good, but the Marshall Major III don’t offer quite the sound scale of the very best at the price. The included micro USB charging cable is refreshingly long, making it easier to use. Marshall estimates battery life to be around 30 hours, but your results will vary with your volume levels. PerformanceI used the headphones with a couple of phones, and in each I could see the battery level in the notification screen. Being able to leave the house at 40% charge knowing you don’t have to worry about recharging for sometime is wireless headphone bliss.

Audiophiles probably won’t rate the quality of the bass frequencies, but if you listen to a lot of guitar music, these might be the headphones for you.The classic Marshall styling has been slimmed down and updated for 2018. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian Although there aren't some fancier features, such as active noise-cancelling, the Major III benefit by offering exceptional battery life - which is among the best we've come across in a pair of headphones. We could go on talking about how good various songs sound through the Major III Bluetooth, but we'd run out of words of praise. We've spent some serious listening time with the Major III Bluetooth to see if they deserve to sit pride of place on your head. The first pair of Major IIIs that Marshall sent in actually had an issue with the headband, resulting in deformations. It was likely a one-off, but is a pitfall of a weaker structure as opposed to a single continuous piece of metal, as seen in the MID headphones.
