Soft skills are skills that cannot be tangibly measured. These include, but are not limited to, communication, teamwork, leadership etc. These soft skills are integral to a career in medicine and can only be assessed during a multiple mini interview scenario. Consequently, it is vital that you are able to evidence these skills during your MMI preparation. The clinician now explores as fully as possible the patient's major problems, following leads obtained during the discussion of the chief complaint. The history of the present illness (HPI) includes all of the patient's history, both recent and remote, that is pertinent to understanding the current illness. In completing the HPI, the physician will often collect pertinent information about the patient's past history (for example, a history of hypertension in a patient with stroke), the patient's family history (for example, a family history of breast cancer in a patient with a breast lump), and the social history (for example, domestic discord in a patient with insomnia and fatigue). A good way to do this in multiple mini interview preparation is to list out your various achievements and roles and then focus on specific soft-skills you’ve gleaned from them, examples of when you put them to use and how they might be useful in a career in medicine. Referencing Work Experience in an MMI The 4 pillars of medical ethics – beneficence, non-maleficence, justice and autonomy – are key learning points for before your MMI. It is not uncommon to be asked about these either directly or indirectly via a staged scenario. Additionally, you should also have an understanding of patient confidentiality, patient safety and other medical ethical practices. The GMC guidelines for medical students is a great place to start in understanding these principles. Make sure you are aware of how much time you have at each station. It is unlikely that the interviewer will guide you with regards to how much time you have left at the station. If the question asks you to discuss 3 skills, then don’t spend most of your time discussing your first skill, leaving little to no time on the other two.
