Description

Mary is alone in a terrifying world where everyone she loves deserts her. She’s strong though, she’s managed to get by and do the best she can, giving the men in her care the best life possible. Mary has settled into this new world and takes care of the male residents at her facility. But she still remembers how things used to be and is constantly haunted by her memories. Of her family, of her joy, of… him.

However, this book focuses more on what has happened many years later. A society run by women, and the few remaining men segregated for their own safety. Or so the Men’s Welfare Agency says, but is there more to the story? The reader will find out. Forty years ago, the world changed. Toxic threads left behind by mutated moths infected men and boys around the globe. Some were killed quietly in their sleep, others became crazed killers, wildly dangerous and beyond help. All seemed hopeless. The world has been severely devastated by Moths that cross bred and carried a deadly toxin that affected only the men in the world. Either by killing them or sending them mad and into fits of rage killing those within their reach. The threads spell doom for humanity – half of it, at least. All around the world, men are dying in their sleep or turning into rage-fuelled killers. The world, as we know it, ends. However, humanity adapts and society moves on.

There is a sequel! I’m writing it now and I am very pleased with how it’s going (so far!). Sign up for the newsletter and I will give you updates on how it’s coming along, as well as additional content. Could the Moth thing really happen? Forty years ago, the world changed in Jane Hennigan’s Moths. Toxic threads left behind by mutated moths infected men and boys around the globe. Some were killed quietly in their sleep, others became crazed killers, wildly dangerous and beyond help. All seemed hopeless. But humanity adapted, healed and moved on. Also, paradoxically, there are also some odd gender stereotypes... At one point it's mentioned that the women didn't struggle with cars after the men were infected because...it was easy to learn from a manual. Were there no women who knew about cars before? Definitely not for the squeamish as there is some content likely to upset those with a sensitive heart. In other words, there is colourful content aplenty. But then again, the world’s going to hell, and society is falling down everywhere you look, so what on earth do you expect. Some images will linger long in the memory. I have read and listened to some of the best horror books around ( Weaveworld being one of my all-time favourite books). I can honestly say Moths ranks up there with the best of them for chills down the spine. The graphic imagery is something that will stay with me for a long time. Oh, Mary, don’t be ridiculous. Their brains aren’t wired for complex ideas....they’re just men – emotional and fragile."I have just added A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World to my best dystopian bookshelf. Well, it looks like I have another one to add to the collection in Moths. I absolutely loved this fast-paced read and I am even more impressed now I know it has been self-published. The concept is horrifying and the characters are so well-written and well-rounded that I felt like I was in this world. But now there’s a vaccine - a way that men can leave the facility without dying or suffering from psychosis. Emerging, into their new world, eyes wide with wonder at every new experience, the truth soon becomes clear.
